At the start of the school year, it is always good to get to know your students with a few ice breaker activities. Once these are completed it is nice to get an understanding of the basic knowledge the students might have of US History. It is nice to include some general questions too.
- How many weeks are there in a year? You may be surprised at the responses and how few students know the answer without googling it.
- Who is the president and vice president?
- Who is the governor?
- Who are the federal senators?
- Who are the federal representatives?
- Who is the principal and vice principal?
- Who is the superintendent?
- What is our school’s mascot.
- List each branch of the US government.
- List what each branch does with a law.
This is a great way to get talking about the US government.
The BIG QUESTION: How does a bill become a law? This is a question very few students may be able to answer the question correctly.
