It is shocking, sometimes at how limited the collective vocabulary of current students is. Every so often I will have my students pinch their nose and repeat after me. “My vocabulary stinks, but it is getting a little better each day.” This may not be the most politically correct statement however, it is true.

It is good to remind the students that improvement is the true measure of success. One goal in freshman US History class is to become more active and critical readers.

One way to help accomplish this goal is to share inspirational quotes from Pass It On. Each week this organization shares a theme. One theme was integrity. At the start of the week, students are asked to define integrity. Students are encouraged to be creative if they do not know the word. All students should have a definition. Monday through Friday Pass It On shares a quote of the day. If a teacher decides to share a quote, the student should

  1. Copy the quote with the author’s name.
  2. Analyze the quote,
  3. Write a reaction to the quote.

We feel it is best to simply grade on effort. It can be challenging for some students, but eliminating the stress of a poor grade will allow the students to focus more on writing.

These quotes also can serve as inspiration and inspire self reflection.

Teachers also can get creative and expand the lesson to learn a little more about the author of the quote if it is a famous person.
