An extreme dot-to-dot activity is a great enrichment activity for high school students. It can be a standalone lesson, on a quiz / test day, or a Friday before vacation. This activity also could be a regular part of a US History curriculum.

What about high school students?

  1. High School Students Will Be Engaged: I was skeptical about how students would respond to the activity. Much to my surprise, EVERY student was engaged in the activity. Part of the excitement was the novelty and nostalgia of the activity. (USS Constitution Activity)
  1. Different Skills & Brain Development: Using different parts of the brain is beneficial to a teen’s brain development. Many in business feel that there are multiple benefits for adults to complete these eactivities (5 Business Lessons Learned from Adult Dot to Dot Books), so why not expose your students?
  1. End of the Term: This is one of the busiest and most stressful times for students (and TEACHERS).What a great way to relieve some of the stress that comes along with receiving and giving final term grades. At the end of the term teachers needs to collect make-up work and / or offer a some students a make-up assessment. Since Covid, this has become more and more the norm rather than the exception.
  1. Special Days: Throughout the school year, a teacher will encounter a handful of “special days.” Some of the days could be student field trips with another class, AP exams, guest speakers, community service, college mini-fairs, days before a vacation, assembly days, rally days etc. As you can see, there are many situations that call for an atypical high school lesson. An extreme dot-to-dot is just one idea to provide a quality learning experience for your students.
  1. Test Day: Some students complete a test early. This is an activity given to students at the end of a test as a homework assignment. Every parent will thank you for providing them with an opportunity for 30 minutes to complete a pen-to-paper activity that will allow for less cell phone time. It could be a TIMED HONOR SYSTEM assignment. Tell the students to complete 15 – 30 minutes. You could allow a little time at the start of class, then start the next unit that is associated with the dot-to-dot.
  1. Connections to the Curriculum: There are many topics that can connect nicely to a US History curriculum. Taking 30 minutes to complete a dot-to-dot is a great way to introduce or review a topic. It is always important to keep the curriculum as the main focus of the instruction.
