Writing Prompts
- Role: Being part of a team involves being able to accept a role. The Patriots model is “Do Your Job.” (Youth sports all-star teams 10 pitchers / shortstops). It is probably one of the most difficult aspects of sports to accept a role for many athletes
- Current Season: Describe your role on your team (starter, backup, pratice player). Explain what specifically you do to help your team win. How hard was it for up to accept your role? Evaluate how well you are filling your role.
- High School Career: A high school career is a journey and each season is a chapter in the book. Talk about how your role has changed (QB2 vs. QB1, starter vs back up, captain vs. underclassman ) What role have you enjoyed the most. How has your role changed over the years?
Chapter 1
YELLOWSTONE CLUB
Edelman: There’s good news and bad news. What do you want first, bro?
Brady: Bad news
Edelman: Looks like you might need a new driver.
Brady: You broke my f*&%ing driver.
Edelman: The good news is we won the Super Bowl.
Chapter III The Social Game
Chapter 2: BIG SKY, MONTANA
July 3, 2017
10 weeks before the season
Food prep and Diet: Who does food prep?
Brady: Blueberry Frost. This is a good mixture today.
Alex: On Point. Brady: On Point.
Brady: I think team sports bring in a humility, because I know that I’m nothing without the guys that I play with. Your role is very fragile. Your role realy only is important if the other guys can come up with the plays. (2:08)
Let’s go Ram Route from stationery.
Good job, babe.
Well we came to the Yellowstone Club. It’s uh, you know, a place I’ve been coming to for a long time. We trained a few summers here. And for me, getting out here and being with two of my teammates is invaluable time because you get a lot of one-on-one time.
That was lazy. That don’t win championships.
Edelman: I guess we enjoy each other’s company. You know, and they’re just like a natural chemistry.
I want to see MFers get out here and start running.
Brady: It’s not my f*&%ing job, man! It’s not my f*&%ing job! (2:54)
It builds, you know, special relationships because you’re doing things that, and how do you build trust? How do you build real love and caring for one another? (3:02)
You have one job and that’s to run. You don’t run f*&%ing three routes and then cry.
It’s enjoyable. (3:05)
Brady: I was throwing short routes because he was trying to f*&%ing cheat me!
Edelman: How am I trying to cheat you?
Brady: You were trying to f*&%ing cheat me!
Brady: Half the day is kind of hard core work and then half a day’s a lot of fun. (golf)
We are going straight to the top. We don’t want no ifs, ands, or butts. We are not rolling these B^&*hes. We know how to drive them. Let’s go. (3:35)
ATV, Mountain Biking, Throwing Rocks
Brady: It broken ½. Oh it broke into 3rds.
I love this type of stuff. You know, when training camp starts there’s no time for us to do anything like this. You know, so you gotta take advantage of the time you get it.
Brady: Oh, that’s Julian. I hardly recognize you with your clothes on. (4:12)
Alex: 40 is just a number. It’s just a number.
Brady: Everyone’s educated why lifting weights is, or yoga, or things like that are good. But, You’ve to balance those out with other areas.
Oh, you are getting in there today.
I seen as I’ve gotten older, I’ve actually improved. I’m more durable now than I was. And everyone says that’s the exact opposite of the way that it should be. But I’m doing a different the way than everyone else is doing it.
Pump the Brakes. Pump the Brakes.
Edelman: I need the extra time.
Kevin Brady: Well we try to incorporate here are fast-twitch movements. Okay. So going and lifting heavy weights isn’t really going to do anything for us.
Edelman: It is a little different though. You need to imply.
Kevin Brady: Imply?
Edelman: I do all the things that you guys do I just incorporate lifting weights because I have to stay strong. Because I have to.
That makes no sense.
Brady: Let’s keep it real. The only reason why you’re trying to get jacked up so you’re gonna be naked on magazines. So, don’t. You ain’t fooling us.
Edelman: Why? Are we really? We’re done with that.
We are done with that. (5:45)
Kevin Brady: We were just educating Julian on fast-twitch muscles and how he is neglecting to understand the core principles of what were trying to do maintain our longevity and as we further our playing career. But if Julian just wants to play another couple years… that’s Julian’s decision okay the one exercise I did yesterday was a bench press and
Edelman: The one exercise I did was a f%^&ing bench press and I’m getting killed about this.
Brady: Someone needs to protect you.
Edelman: I’ve been hearing this for eight years. Eight years. We’ve been in an argument for eight years.
Danny Amendola: I think there has to be like a medium in everything. I feel like you have to have strength but you have to have pliability and flexibility. You have to have…
Alex: I’m not an anti-weight guy. Everybody thinks I’m anti-weights.
Brady: I think weights with pliability are optimal. That’s what you want
Alex: I think you should train for what you want to get out of your training.
Edelman:
Brady: You need to be strong. You just need to look. You need to be strong. (6:43)
Brady: We’re trying to build something together. And I think we all need to feel like we’re part of the same unit. We’re all the same when you’re out on the field. No one really gives a %$it what I’ve done. They want me to do it now. In the same way that I want them doing now,
I don’t care if they won Heisman. I don’t care if they went to Michigan or Alabama. Now they’re a Patriot and I need them to perform a job.
That to me would be like a normal ghost route. So I would go whip my head in out. Go. (7:38)
Brady: You know, I’ve been able to work with lot of guys need. These two guys are so committed to me. And I think that reflects when we play the biggest games and who gets the ball.
Announcer:
It is not about BSing. It is not about vacationing. I mean, we are not coming here and just, you know $%^&ing off two and a half days. I want us to put the work in because I want to pay off.
Good Job.

Talk Radio: Is it time for Patriots fans to panic?
Announcer: It is shocking, qualitatively not good they’ve been.
Obviously defense is struggling. Can Brady overcome what appears to be a way below-average defense?
Brady: Frustrating. This first quarter has been frustrating. We came off a year we did so well and we didn’t lose many people. And two weeks before the season started, and we lose a critical player in our offense. That has really forced our offense to change in a big way. (August 25, 2017)
Edelman: Confidence was high. Made a couple plays before. Going too fast on a sticky surface you know
Brady: Jules is so important. All of sudden BOOM, you are without him.
It wasn’t my choice. It wasn’t his choice. That was just the circumstance. This is about the time where things start getting hard in the NFL season.
After 5-6 weeks of football people are feeling it. (9:26)
Brady: If we get the Jets, 4 – 2. That’s a big game against Atlanta. We’ll pull it out 5-2. And then San Diego 6-2.
Alex: Then you got the Bye week.
Brady: Then we got the bye week. 6 – 2. Then we got to back to back road games.
Alex: Denver and Oakland. (Thinkig about the season)
Brady: Denver and Oakland.
Brady: What’s up?
Jack (son): Oh hello. I was wondering if I could check my fantasy team.
Brady: What do I get?
Alex: Everything comes with a cost, Jack.
Brady: That was like a peck. (Personal Foul)
Alex: Who is your fantasy quarterback, Jack?
Jack (son): Cam Newton.
Alex: Cam Newton
Brady: Not his dad. Cam Newton is having a good game?
Jack (son): Yeah!
Brady: Are the Condons still here?
Jack (son): Yeah!
Brady: Oh good. What are you guys doing?
Jack (son): We’re watching NFL.
Brady: No one’s getting hurt, right?
Jack (son): Except for… I don’t know.
Alex: Did somebody get punched in the face?
Jack (son): Tyrod Taylor. He is shaking up. That’s what they said.
Brady: I am going to shake you up.
ome here I’m gonna shake you up.
Talk Radio: Is tonight a must-win for the Patriots?
Week 5
Patriots at Bucs
Talk Radio: It’s week five. They’re two and two. Of course tonight’s a must win for the Patriots.
It’s a pretty damn big game now tonight.
You lose this one you’re two and three, you go home you gotta sit with that in your crawl and that sits in your stomach for next nine or ten days.
Brady: To make judgements after 4 weeks. You know about, oh they’re gonna win the Super Bowl. Oh they’re not going to make the playoffs or nobody knows I mean there is still so much to go. That is like calling a boxing match after the end of the 3rd round.
It only gets harder from here. to win the Superbowl. it only gets harder from here.
Announcer: They got one shot for the game The Patriots hold on for the victory.
Buc 14 Patriots 19
Brady: I have a healthy respect for my teammates. You know everyone’s trying to achieve. You’re all trying to climb the same mountain. One of my coaches said something great, he said I want to look in your eyes and know that you want the same thing that I want. He said once I see that, then I know, we’re going in the right direction.
I show up to work everyday just like them. Trying to do the same thing. We have the same goals, but my connection with them is through you know joy and love. It’s not through fear. It’s not through insults. That’s not how I lead.
Jets 17 Patriots 24
Announcer: That is White Touchdwn.
The Patriots, they are rounding into form. It really is. And it reminds you that you feel like an idiot now for having said anything about them.
Announcer: Tom Brady threw some passes last night that looked like he was 25 years old.
What we saw last night, the Patriots got good… as usual.
Chargers 13 Patriots 21
Brady: When you have group of people that you’re surrounded by that hold each other accountable every moment of every day. You know those are the teammates that you’re looking for. And that’s why you think, you know, you can keep building on your success, cuz nothing’s going to change at this point.
2 hours later
Brady: I think at this point 6 and 2 after the way it started is decent. Football season is never easy.
Oh my God. Look at that girl. How adorable?
You look adorable. I love this dress. And your tights.
Interviewer: How excited are you for the bye week.
Brady: I spend some time with her and and my kids. Oh I love it. All the time I can get with them, I love. So, Daddy is working hard every day.
So this is good. It’s a good time to catch our breath.
Interviewer: It never stops.
Brady: Daddy boss me around.
Thoughts on Episode!
Would you like to have Tom Brady as your teammate?
