One of the hardest things in teaching is returning to school after an extended break. What is the best way for a teacher to transition from vacation mode to teacher mode? Designing an effective and easy to execute lesson is a challenge. Rookie and veteran teachers often ask the same question. “What can I do on the 1st day back from vacation that works well for the students AND me?… 

Have the students WRITE!

This is a great transition for the students and allows the teacher a little quiet time to plan out the back to school week, even if it only 15 – 20 minutes for each class.

Writing across the curriculum has been a theme in education for many years, as well as being a focus of many schools and school districts. We are firm believers that good things happen when students write. Returning from a school break is a great opportunity to have students write on topics they are familiar with and that are not threatening to the students. 

Pens, pencils, and paper are perfect for this activity.

Teachers can adjust the prompts to fit grade levels and content areas.

The following prompts can be used with seniors in high school after a Christmas Break. These prompts are designed for a Sports in Society Class.

My break (everyone), My team (Players): Recount the highlights, low lights, and events of your team over break. List your current record and share personal experiences. 

Fans: Write about your experiences with the team. Talk about your interactions with your friends on the team. If you attended any games, describe your thoughts and experiences.

Next Year Plans: Update your options for next September. List the schools that are still on your list and rank them in order of preference.

The benefit of timed writing allows all students to share their thoughts and opinions on paper even if they do not share in the class discussion. All students have different writing ability levels. Providing them with opportunities to write about topics they are comfortable with will only improve writing skills.
