August signals the start of the school year for most teachers. Hopefully teachers had time relax, recharge and grow. With each new year there is a new set of challenges. There will be new staff and possibly administration. There may have been budget cuts and layoffs. Teachers may be teaching a new grade or a new class. The return to school is a very stressful time for families, students, and teachers. The start of the school year sets the tone for the remainder of the days, so it is important to get off on the right foot.

  1. Have a Plan: Have a plan for the return to school. Adjust the sleep schedule so that you will be able to make the adjustment to the new routine. Perhaps you are a veteran teacher and have plans set for the 1st few days. Otherwise you may need to spend some time “prepping” to great the students.
  2. Make Time to Reconnect with Colleagues: There never is enough hours in the day for a teacher. This is especially true on the first day, HOWEVER, it is important to take time to say hello to old friends including office staff, custodians, and aids.
  3. Get to Know Your Students (Teaching: Can A High School Teacher Really Learn 100+ Student Names in 1 Week?) It is important to teach the whole child, so it is important to know more than the academic skills. Find ways to learn about hobbies and passions. Learn a little about a student’s heritage.
  4. Make Time to Exercise: Your health is VERY important. The demands on teachers today can be overwhelming and time consuming. Find time during the school week, and possibly school day, to get some exercise. It will be great in the long run for your physical and mental health
