The day before Thanksgiving is often one of the most unusual school days of the year. If there is school on Wednesdays, it typically is the shortest day of the year. For example, at one high school, the periods are twenty-five minutes shorter than a regular day. (23 minutes vs. 48). Given the uniqueness of this day. it is important for a teacher to be creative with a lesson plan.
Create a Thanksgiving playlist for your class to listen to as they work. It should be songs with the theme of gratitude and thankfulness.
Make and Hand Turkey: This is an oldie but goodie lesson plan. Many high school students enjoy completing an art activity because so few have an opportunity to do so. It also is an activity that all students can successfully complete. If you or the students have crayons or colored pencils, just making and coloring the turkey could take the entire period.
I am grateful for… A teacher can have a lot of fun with this.
Gratitude List: This one is so open-ended. Just have the students list 25 things they are thankful for, people, places, passions, meals, etc. Extra Credit: A picture of the list / turkey on the refrigerator.
1 Person they will see at Thanksgiving: The student should list 25 things they are thankful for. Extra Credit: Take a selfie of the turkey and list with the student and the person they gave it to
5 People: The student can pick 5 people and write the name on one of the fingers on the turkey. On the back you can have them list 5 – 10 things for each person. Things to include are positive character traits, meals, and essentially anything that makes that person special to the student. Extra Credit: A picture of the list / turkey on the refrigerator. 4 Quandrants: The teacher can have the students flip the paper over and give them one topic for each quadrant. Some ideas for the quadrants are family, my school, my town, my passion, music, food, etc. Extra Credit: A picture of the list / turkey on the refrigerator.
