Weather and other factors can impact the start time throughout the year. In the event there is a one-hour or two-hour delay to the start of the school day, we have a few thoughts and ideas.

Should I go in? This is probably the most important question. If you decide it is in your best interest to stay home, you can stop reading. It might make more sense to call in sick or use a personal day if going into school creates too many challenges.

Print a copy of the schedule. Obviously with a two hour delay, there will be adjustments to the length of the periods. The order of periods could also be altered to meet requirements for serving lunch.

What is the reason for the delay? Very often school delays are related to weather or powers outages. A few school systems may have delayed starts as part of their regular school year, but most have delays on rare occasions. The weather conditions will have an impact on the commute. Factor in the weather when planning a departure time for a delayed opening. Will you need to shovel? Will there be traffic? These are some questions that should be considered when planning the day.

Student attendance with a delayed start it is likely they will be an increase. Plan your lesson accordingly. A delayed start may be a good day for enrichment activities or make up work.

Good luck.
