  • Massachusetts Physics Teachers are Great Tutors!

Physics teachers are very special individuals. They have a passion for a topic and class that most adults look back on with disdain.
If you are like me, physics was one of the most challenging classes of my educational  experience. I struggled with problems every night and was so nervous before every test. I had friends who helped with my studies, but I probably could have benefited from a tutor.
The goal of My Town Tutors is to provide parents and students with qualified teachers who tutor. We are very fortunate to have number of qualified physics teachers who tutor on the South Shore. Currently, we list three Physics tutors from three different schools. If you need a Physics tutor on the South Shore, we have some great options.
Dr. Anthony DeFranzo, Hanover High School. Dr. D as he is affectionately know in the halls of Hanover High is an extremely motivated teacher who has the ability to reach students of all different learning abilities. He has been teaching Honors and AP physics for longer than he can remember.
Dr. DeFranzo is an ideal tutor for the Rockland, Abington, and Norwell area.
Ms. Rebecca Roy, Holbrook High School. Rebecca was one of our most popular tutors last year. She has tutored high school and college students from the Quincy and Braintree areas.  She has an undergraduate degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The feedback from the parents and students who have worked with her has been tremendous.
Ms. Roy would be a great resource for students in Quincy, Braintree, Avon, Holbrook and Weymouth.
Mr. Kenneth Magno, Marshfield High School. Mr. Magno has been teaching Physics at Marshfield High School for the past several years. He has taught AP Physics C: Mechanics (Calculus-Based), Honors Physics, and College Prep Physics. Mr. Magno has worked with students on most math courses from K-8 through Calculus. In addition to his teaching duties, he is the advisor for the MHS FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Team.
Mr. Magno could help students in Hanover, Scituate, Plymouth, Duxbury, and Marshfield.
These three Physics teachers make My Town Tutors a great resource for parents, students, and guidance counselors on the South Shore. We currently list over 230 teachers who tutor in Massachusetts. We are currently using twitter and direct mailings to contact schools and PTOs.
Please visit My Town Tutors and share this information with other teachers and parents in your area.
Teachers who tutor can be listed with My Town Tutors until September 30, 2014 for only $12. We list over 230 teachers in Massachusetts and welcome teachers from all 50 states.

  • My Town Tutors: It's as Easy as ABC

My Town Tutors has a goal of being the number one resource for Massachusetts parents looking to connect with teachers who tutor.
We have one simple belief:  Massachusetts “Teachers are great tutors!”
My Town Tutors started in Hanover, Massachusetts and currently lists 225+ teachers who tutor. Parents on the South Shore now have an outstanding resource when they are looking for local tutors. We can field the majority of tutoring requests for all grade levels.
Our challenge now is to reach as many teachers and parents in the other areas of Massachusetts. We are using several different methods. This post will explain how we are using the ABC method to reach every high school in Massachusetts before the start of the 2012-2013 school year.
    It’s as Easy as ABC
We have a listing of all the Massachusetts High Schools. In addition to contacting teachers, parents, and administrators by athletic leagues, we will be contacting 4 people in each school starting with all the “A” high schools.
    We will contact:
    1. A Math Teacher – Many parents and students are interested in having math tutoring. One math teacher per school will be contacted with a note and a few business cards. We are asking these teachers to share the note with other educators.
Tutoring is a great way for teachers to make extra money. It only costs a teacher $12 to be listed as a tutor for over 2 years (until September 2014). The teacher keeps all other fees. If they decide to charge $75 an hour, they keep all $75 dollars. There are no hidden fees.
The membership is from now until September 30, 2014, a very low cost to have the ability of making $50 – $200 a week.
    2. A High School Principal – We feel our service can benefit an entire school community. Higher grades and SAT scores can be a great reflection on a school system. Confident and motivated students have less behavior issues and more self-esteem.
A principal also has the ability to share information with an entire school district. A principal communicates with parents, students, teachers, guidance counselors, and so many other members of a school community. We are asking the principals to simply share a letter and article with their school community.
    3. A High School Guidance Counselor – As a veteran educator, I know how challenging it is to find qualified tutors. My Town Tutors has solved this problem. We only list teachers who tutor. Teachers from other schools who live in a town can be a great resource.
We are asking guidance counselors to post a flier in their office to share information with parents and students. We also would encourage them to list our service on the school guidance page. Guidance counselors have extremely challenging jobs. Eliminate the time spent looking for tutors can free up time for them to spend on the so many other tasks of a guidance counselor.
    4. The High School PTO – Parents have the most important job in America. My Town Tutors values the time and effort that our parents commit to their children. Teaching morals, values and work ethic are best taught at home.
But …… Physics?… Chemistry?… Calculus?… Geometry?… French? This is beyond the abilities of so many parents. The goal of My Town Tutors is to provide parents with a great resource to find a qualified local teacher who tutors.
We have just started to send out letters to all the “A” schools. Please understand, My Town Tutors is committed to being the #1 resource for tutoring in Massachusetts. We are very well-established on the South Shore. In Abington, we currently list 83 tutors within 15 miles of 02351.
Even though we currently do not yet list any tutors in that Athol, we hope with our direct mailings, to be able to some great tutoring options for Athol parents.
We ask that teachers have faith in our service and sign-up. It only takes one teacher to start us off. We are committed to teachers and parents. Please have a little faith and patience as we work to be the best resource for parents and teachers who are interested in finding a tutor.
If you are teacher or parent, please help share this information with others.

    Writing Advice for College Students

Arthur Bio: Carol Mortensen has twenty-three years of educational experience.  The Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) named Carol the Classroom Teacher of the Year for her innovative and creative use of technology to create a 24/7 virtual classroom using her classroom website. Carol has presented at school districts throughout Texas as well as state and local conferences on a variety of technology integration topics. Her article on the use of websites as an instructional tool was recently published in the TechEdge Magazine.  In February 2011, her article, Lessons Learning In a 1:1 Classroom, was published by TechEdge.  The article was republished in ISTE’s Learning  and Leading magazine in August 2011.  She was named Fairmont Junior High’s Teacher of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year. Educators often find themselves overwhelmed and stressed with a plate full of responsibilities that are literally flowing over.  While we may not be able to decrease the requirements that we encounter, we can take some steps to improve our efficiency in completing them.  When we do this, we are able to spend more time facilitating our students and less time on the organization and non-student contact activities. Luckily, we all have a great resource available to do just that and it’s literally been sitting right there in front of us for some time.  Firefox Add-Ons are free extensions that can be added to your Firefox browser to improve its functionality in almost every area of teaching.  From improving your own organization to providing students with free tools that support the content areas, Firefox Add-Ons can almost provide an answer for every time we stop and think “I wish there was an easier way to do this” or “If only my students had access to…”  As a bonus, the Firefox add-ons can enhance the presentation of materials and content to students to that the learning experience itself is improved and students are provided an optimal learning experience. Below are just a few examples of what’s available for educators: Clearly - How many times have you found a great resource for students online but the page ads or design was distracting for the students?  Clearly solves that problem by providing a one-click clean-up of the page so that all that remains is a clear, crisp article.  Whether displaying information in class or sending along a tutoring resource to your students, Clearly helps provide the information suitable for optimal learning.  Clearly doesn’t stop there, either. Once the page is cleared of distractions, you have the ability to change the text and background color and/or increase or decrease the font size.  For students with special needs, this is a huge benefit. Fox Tab – If you’re presenting to a student either online or face-to-face, Fox Tab is bound to improve the experience. Fox Tab serves as a speed dialer for all of your favorite websites which you choose to include.  No more fumbling for forgotten URL’s or wasted time during website transitions because you simply click on Fox Tab and an eye-appealing layout of your selected websites is waiting for you.  A simple click and you are moving on to the next important concept with your students.  The layouts are dynamic and 3D and you have the option of styles to suit you and your students’ tastes. Wired-Marker – Turn your projected or shared webpage into an interactive board that you can annotate with permanent markers.  Use them to highlight important information for your students and add important notes and information. Because the markers are permanent and will be visible upon returning to a previously visited website, you can highlight important information you don’t want to forget knowing that it will serve as a reminder when you return to the site. ReminderFox – Don’t stop and write down notes to yourself when you think of to-do tasks or write an appointment time on a sticky note for a last-minute student tutoring session change.  Instead, use ReminderFox right from your Firefox browser to quickly note all important dates and tasks.  Set reminders and you’ll find yourself never forgetting an important task again with the most minimal of effort! This is just four examples of the thousands and thousands of free tools that are available to streamline your work and improve the academic outcome for students.  You’ll find everything from graphing calculators to photo editing tools. There are tools to make browsing safer and faster.  Luckily, each tool is rated and the number of users who have downloaded the tools is shown.  User reviews are available on the page provided to each add-on, as well. It just may be that the answer for many of your work needs is readily available at no cost within the Firefox browser.  A quick install of an add-on may improve a lesson, a teaching method, or a work problem in ways you might never have imagined. If you are ready to give the Firefox Browser Add-On's a try, check out my list of Firefox Essential Add-Ons For Educators.  I’ve included 51 of my tried and true favorites including the ones mentioned earlier.  You’ll find step-by-step instructions for customizing Firefox with these Add-Ons here. Just a word of warning: Be prepared!  Once you realize the value and functionality that these tools have to offer, you are likely to be creating collections of your own!

  • Massachusetts Teachers are Great Tutors!

My Town Tutors believes Massachusetts “Teachers are great tutors!” We make it easy for parents to connect with local teachers who tutor. We currently have over 230 Massachusetts teachers registered, but we need so many more.
    We have two simple beliefs.
    1. Teachers are great tutors!
    2. Parents want great tutors for their children.
The idea for My Town Tutors was conceived while walking the grounds of the Marshfield Fair the week before school started. Another teacher was working fourteen straight, 18-hour days for $10 an hour as a security guard. Many other security guards were teachers who needed extra money to make it to the 1st pay check and working the Marshfield Fair was the best, and for some, only, part-time job available.
I suddenly realized that creating MyTownTutors could solve two major problems for teachers, students, and parents:
    1. Teachers can use their education, experience, knowledge, and training to do what they do best – help students achieve academically. At the same time, these teachers could have the flexibility of selecting their own hours and own rate of pay (definitely more than $10 an hour).
    2. Parents can find qualified, professional teachers, with unique skills to work with a child. Parents can have complete confidence that the every tutor we list has experience and training working with students who have a variety of learning abilities and styles.
My Town Tutors firmly believes teachers who tutor are a much better alternative for parents than the national tutoring franchises. Many of these companies rarely employ teachers, and if they do, the teachers are grossly underpaid. The national franchise tutors are usually college students who have little, if any, training or experience working with students. Additionally, the cost of these services for parents is insanely high.
    “Teacher are great tutors!”
Massachusetts teachers know the curriculum, content, and state standards. More importantly, teachers know children. They understand the learning process and the challenges faced by many students. They speak regularly with other educators and have been trained to use strategies to reach many different learning styles.
The goals of My Town Tutors are really simple.

    1. To make it easy for students and parents to connect with a qualified, local teacher who tutors.
    1. To help teachers who tutor earn additional income with a flexible schedule that fits their needs.

Last fall, My Town Tutors was tested successfully in the towns south of Boston. Parents and teachers loved it! We now list over 225 teachers who tutor.
Over the summer we added some great new features, including updates to our profile page (Tutor Profile: Mark Molloy) and we are reaching out to teachers across the state.
My Town Tutors would love to have any Massachusetts (or U.S.) teacher who tutors join our national directory. With our special promotion, teachers can register until September 31, 2014 for only $12. There are no other fees for our service. If a teacher charges $50 an hour, the teacher keeps all $50. It is that simple.
If any teacher or parent has a question about our services, please email – mark@mytowntutors.com. I would appreciate any feedback.

The Pi Day Challenge really is a slice of heaven for math teachers.
March 14th (3.14) is the annual celebration of the number pi – 3.1415926. It is a day for math teachers to be creative and use 21st century resources to engage a new generation of math learners. (For more lesson ideas read our recent post 5 Amazing Websites to Prepare for the Pi Day Challenge
The best interactive activity for math enthusiasts to celebrate Pi Day is the Pi Day Challenge! The opening page of the website explains:
“The Pi Day Challenge is a series of puzzles that are logic-based. A team of logicians adapted or created these puzzles – some require research, some require mathematics, some require pure savvy.”
There are 3 easy ways to accept the the Pi Day Challenge:

    1. Sign on with Facebook
    2. Enter an email address and password OR
    3. Register as a guest

The Pi Day Challenge team wants students and adults around the world to be able to participate easily and hassle-free, that is why they created these very convenient and easy to use options.
Teachers can use this 21st Century Learning activity in a variety of ways.
Test your personal knowledge – These activities are very fun and challenging. The puzzles require you to think in a variety of ways. It may be that you judge the the Pi Day Challenge to be a great activity that is level appropriate for your students.
No matter how a math teachers uses this activity, taking the challenge is an amazing opportunity to see how the Pi Day Challenge could be incorporated into your curriculum.
Spend a class period in the computer room – If your school has the technology and availability, and your students have the skill and motivation, spend a class period working together or individually to solve the puzzles. Just step back and watch how students will creatively and cooperatively work to solve the problems.
Solve the problems as a class – Although probably not the most ideal way to engage students, if you have access to a Smart Board / projector, you could complete some of the puzzles as a class. Using this method would work great with smaller class sizes. Perhaps you select a few of the puzzles that are most appropriate for your students’ abilities.
Extra Credit – This is a final alternative if your school is technologically challenged. With this method you will engage your motivated students. You may not reach all your students, however the ones you do emgage will be completely passionate about finding the solutions.
The Pi Day Challenge team uses a variety of ways to track the progress. The genius board is a listing of all the people who have completed the entire challenge.
We have spoken with Matthew Plummer, the creator of the The Pi Day Challenge. We are hoping to have him provide a guest post in the future.
As you can imagine, he and his team are extremely busy right now providing such an incredible resource for the entire mathematical community.
If you enjoy this challenge, please consider making the small donation in celebration of Pi $3.14. He has invested years of his time developing this great challenge. He would love to be able to continue to provide The Pi Day Challenge in the future.

My Town Tutors loves parents and teachers. We know how important these two roles are in the development of our youth. We feel being a parent is THE most important job in America. Moms and dads raise our children, teach them values, and encourage them to reach their potential.
Being a parent and / or a teacher can be very challenging at times. Parents and teachers regularly encounter situations that are unfamiliar. How do I teach my child to use social media responsibly? What are possible options for college and post high school? How can I find a tutor? How do I meet the curriculum needs for my school and provide personal learning? How can I confront bullying in the classroom? What can I do to prepare my child or student for the 21st century?
I wish I had the answers to all these questions. Unfortunately, I do not, but I might be able to help.
    Guest Blogs!

I am honored to have such experienced people share their knowledge.
We hope these guest blogs will stimulate discussion and raise awareness about the issues relating to parenting, teaching, and learning. We hope some will bring a smile to your face or perhaps a tear to your eye. That certainly sounds like a grandiose title but it is 100% true and I will prove it to you in under 850 words. Based on that claim, I have no time to waste…except for right there…and there  : )
The unfortunate fact is that in the past several years, almost half of our country’s states have altered their pension system in some form: either by reducing future employee benefits or increasing employee contribution percentages (or both). More states are considering doing the same or states that have already made amendments are looking to further alter their pension to the further detriment of their employees.
Most state governments (and certainly the federal government) are facing budget deficits, debt, & pension deficits that range from moderate to significant. A 2010 study done by the Pew Center on the States, “The Trillion Dollar Gap”, graded each of the 50 state’s pension systems and 34 of them rated as either ‘Needs Improvement’ or ‘Serious Concerns’.
If you think state teacher pension systems are in trouble now, wait for the next decade to pass. According to a 2010 McKinsey & Company report titled “Closing the Talent Gap”: more than half of today’s teachers, 1.8 of 3.3 million, will become retirement age eligible in the next decade. What will happen when these already stressed pension systems see massive outflows of their highest paid teachers from the ranks of paying into the pool of pension dollars and pull a 180 by starting to take money out of the system.
Even if every teacher that retires is replaced, how can an unstable pension recover when waves of baby boomer aged teachers retire each year and with them take 75-80% of their higher end of the pay-scale salaries from the pension each year only to be replaced by new teachers at the lowest end of the pay-scale contributing no more than 10% of their salary into the system?
Hopefully that doesn’t scare you too much as there is a solution. Back to the title of this post, what does this have to do with tutoring? How can that save your state’s pension plan and ensure that you are provided fully with the benefits you’ve earned and deserve? Plain and simple, it can’t.
    Okay, end of post.
    Just kidding.
While tutoring can’t save your pension, it can save your personal retirement. It isn’t exactly a secret that teachers are under paid and underappreciated. And since teachers are already contributing a significant amount of their earnings to their state’s pension, it is understandable that there isn’t much money left over to save for retirement outside of the pension.
This is where tutoring comes in. Many parents are looking for tutors for their children and are clearly looking for qualified people for the job. Who is more qualified to teach than teachers? Your experience and expertise gives you a huge advantage in the tutor market as well as could (and should) allow you to command a higher rate than others looking to tutor (and certainly if you have a specialty subject that further distinguishes you above the rest). Especially when you consider finding the most effective tutor for the child is the top priority for parents over trying to find a “bargain”.
At My Town Tutors, rates range from around $30 – $85 per hour. Let’s say a 35 year old teacher hoping to retire at age 65 started tutoring just one hour per week at the lowest rate in that range and saved every penny of it in a retirement account outside of their pension. With a modest long term average investment return of 7% over the 30 years from age 35-65 (for comparison’s sake, the stock market as a whole was around 9% for the past century), the teacher would retire with an extra $157,674 at retirement.
That is a very nice buffer to protect against anything potentially happening in the future to decrease your pension benefits. And if nothing adverse happens to your pension (cross your fingers), then you have that much more at your disposal to be able to do and see more of the things you’ve always hoped for. Just for fun, if that teacher received 9% average per year instead of 7%, they would have retired with $231,777 in the account.
It isn’t hard to imagine what would happen if you charged more per hour or worked more than one hour per week as a tutor.
Teachers have a great deal to offer as tutors, it can be a nice change of pace from working with full classrooms, and the potential long term rewards to your retirement for giving personalized teaching attention to individual students are now clear.
Clocked in under my quoted 850 words, I hope I was able to prove to you how tutoring can save your retirement.
However, having that knowledge is only half the battle. Teachers have many different types of retirement plans available to them and they aren’t all built the same. In fact, the difference between simply choosing your best option as opposed to your worst available option can result in tens of thousands of dollars more in your account at retirement. The even more shocking fact is that 80% of teachers choose the worst type of retirement plan available to them.
