Announcers Have Great Calls That Live On with The March Madness Moment
Broadcast Team: Brent Musburger (play-by-play) and Billy Packer (analyst) were the lead announcing team for CBS at the time. Game Context: The game took place on April 4, 1983, at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
N.C. State 54 – Houston 52 (April 4, 1983)
Billy Packer: Down to 25 seconds. Dangerous pass.
Brent Musburger: This is really interesting strategy by Houston. They’re aggressive now. Not staying back.
Billy Packer: Remember, they have Akeem in there to block anything that goes in side. Down to 14 seconds.
Brent Musburger: Oh. Almost stolen by Drexler. Boy, is he good at that.
Billy Packer: They’ve got to drive to the basket. It’s down to 7 seconds.
Brent Musburger: You see the time. Wittenberg…Oh, it’s a long ways.
Billy Packer: They won it! On the dunk. [BIG GAP – SILENCE]
Brent Musburger: Lorenzo Charles with the final. He won it and these are the first two points of the 2nd half by anyone on the front line for North Carolina State. Wittenberg. This is from 30 feet out. Watch Charles. And with two seconds, the kid was able to put it in. And the Team of Destiny, the Cardiac Kids, North Carolina State, has captured their second NCAA Championship to go with 1974’s title. 54 to 52…
Have you ever seen more emotion than at the end of this game?

Play-by-Play: Ian Eagle
Analysts: Bill Raftery and Grant Hill
UConn 73 – Duke 72 (March 29, 2026)
Ian Eagle Bill Rafferty & Grant Hill: (Start at 3:04)
Ian Eagle: 72-70 Duke. 10 seconds to go.
Bill Rafferty: Got to cut and run through the ball. And who better than this guy?
Ian Eagle: Get it in to Boozer. Back to Saar. Ahead to Boozer. THAT BALL DEFLECTED AND STOLEN BY MULLINS. CARAVAN 2 SECONDS MULLINS TOSSES IT UP! OHHHHH! It’s good. With .3. UCONN GOES IN FRONT.
Bill Rafferty: Utterly impossible.
Ian Eagle: MARCH MEANS DRAMA
Bill Rafferty: The deflection, the reaction, and the major legends. OUT OF INDIANA! They all can shoot. Nylon from deep. Astounding.
Ian Eagle: The freshman Braylon Mullins. What a play.
Grant Hill: All Duke had to do was hold the ball there…
Bill Rafferty: That’s utterly impossible.
Brent Musburger: Final Analysis.
Like the frontline of N.C. State, Alex Karaban (0 – 5, 1 – 6) and
Braylon Mullins (0 – 4, 1 – 5) struggled shooting, missing all their 3-point attempts until their last attempt.
Athletes linked together forever. Dereck Whittenburg and Lorenzo Charles are the bookends to that magical play. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are another pair historically linked by an NCAA championship game and so much more.
