Have you ever been inspired by a motivational speaker’s words? With YouTube, TedTalks, and social media, most of the speeches roday are seen digitally, which is much different than seeing a speaker in person.

Jim Valvano recalls the words he heard from Bob Richards when he has was a 16-year-old boy at a basketball camp. These simple words changed his life.

This is a clip from the 30 for 30, Survive and Advance (36:53 – 37:38).

Words that Inspire: I was 16 years old. I heard the Reverend Bob Richards speak. Remember him? The Wheaties guy? The decathlon, pole vault champion. Bob Richards looked over a group of these young kids at a basketball camp and said “The Lord must have loved ordinary people, because he made so many of us.”

And there I am, 16, thinking I am special. And here is a man I respect saying “The Lord must have loved ordinary people, he made so many of us ordinary.”

You get a little down at 16 when someone is telling you that.

And then he said the line that changed my life at 16, that I felt then. And I feel it the same way today. He said “Every single day, in every walk of life, ordinary people do extraordinary things. Ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things.”
