Election week is a different week in many Massachusetts schools. We are not sure about other states, but many communities in Massachusetts, do not have the students attend school on election day. This can create some daycare planning issues for many families, but should not have a big impact on a teacher.

For teachers and educators, it means Election Day is often a full day of professional development. In sports, the two most exciting words are Game Seven. I do not believe any teacher has said the two most exciting words are Professional Development.

A full professional day can be filled with mandatory district trainings, such as first aid and active shooting. The day also could be devoted to school evaluations if the school is on that cycle. For Massachusetts High Schools, the evaluating organization for NEASC- New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Professional development days are often a reflection of the school administration and their goals. There is wide range of how a principal will run a professional development day. Some have very detailed, down to the last-minute schedules while others allow for a lot of flexibility.

Election day also coincides with the end of the term. This is a great opportunity for a teacher to finish grading assignments. November also is the time for parent conferences. Teachers should start to prepare for for these as well. Many schools have parents sign up online for a time slot so teachers can be prepared to discuss a particular students progress. Schools that have sign ups allow for more efficient meetings. Parent conferences were parents simply come to the room during a two hour window require a teacher to spend time locating the student and the student assessments.

Election day is also the beginning of the state high school playoffs for fall sports. This creates a lot of excitement within the halls of schools with competitive teams. Student athletes can be a little more anxious. Students also will attend these playoff matches so testing and assessments during this time can be a little less effective.

Looking ahead, teachers need to be aware of the Veterans Day holiday. The stop and go nature of election day. Veterans Day can mess a little with the flow of instruction.
