My Town Tutors is a great resource for parents & teachers. Check out our Guest Blogs for EducationParentsTravelTutoringSportsMusic and College.

Where are they now? Check the Coaching Resumes at the bottom of the page.

Narrator: Michael Chiklis (Lowell native)

With the rematch of the Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, it is a great chance to look at the 1st meeting. Do Your Job is a great documentary that could be used in a Sports or Psychology class.

We have included some of the resumes of the coaching staff at the bottom of the page. We have also done our best to provide the transcript to make it a little easier for the teacher to design a lesson or create writing prompts or discussion questions.

Good Luck!

2014

  • Explain the teaching focus of the high school coaches.
  • List the fundamentals that are introduced and stressed at the start of a season.
  • Explain the core drills that stress fundamentals.
  • Explain the role of conditioning.

Text: The text may not be perfect, but it is helpful for a teacher to follow. A teacher can stop the video for writing prompts and discussion questions.

Narrator: The offices of the New England Patriots are not open to the public. Their secrets to success are rarely discussed. Their coaching staff seldom heard from until now. (0:34)

NFL championships are won on the football but they designed inside buildings like this one.

2014 Training Camp

Narrator: These are the architects of the 2014 Patriots. Their jobs are complex. The goal was simple… To win a championship! (1:05)

Bill Belichick: Finish the play, buddy. Finish the play! That’s your job!

Do your job! Let’s go. Fundamentals.

Narrator: Bill Belichick demands that of his players. And also his assistants.

Matt Patricia: We will go to him with new ideas all the time, or what we think are new ideas which is stuff that he probably just ran 30 years ago or 20 years ago.

Josh McDaniels: I mean this is just a throw it out there and see how you…

Chad O’Shea: He wants you to disagree. He respects that. He listens.

Josh Boyer: Sometimes in the back of your mind you’re going, okay this is a first ballot Hall of Fame coach and you’re just telling him hey this is messed. (1:51)

2026 DENIED NOT A 1st Ballot Hall of Fame Coach

Josh McDaniels: TRUST: He trusts us and then he demonstrates that by allowing us to go out and make decisions.

Bill Belichick: I make a lot of mistakes. And sometimes you’re not as quick to recognize your own as somebody else’s or somebody else can recognize yours before you do. (2:13)

Let’s take it one thing at a time. No. Perfect. (2:16)

Josh McDaniels: He has such an unbelievable, uncanny ability to know when to change moods. That’s the thing that you need as a great leader.

Bill Belichick: CHANGE MOODS: Get on the sideline! Get on the sidelines. “No shorts cuts to being in condition. No shorts cut to being mentally tough.”

Discussion Get on the sideline…. Share experience when you have had a coach  CHANGE MOODS!. Worst example. Why was there a shift in mood? (2:35)

Narrator: The Patriots begin the season 2-1, then came Kansas City (2018 AFC Championship Game)

DEFINING MOMENTS in a season.

Bill Belichick: We didn’t play well at all. We gave a big plays. We turned the ball over… So we came in at halftime. We were talking about adjustments. And all that but, I didn’t really feel like that’s what the game was about at all. I felt like the game was just really about competition.

And that is what I told the team at halftime. I said, this second half is going to define our season. And I want to see what kind of football team we have. I’m not that concerned about the score. Until we start competing better. Until we start playing harder. All the Xs and Os and adjustments aren’t going to make any difference. (3:19)

Narrator: On the scoreboard… it only got worse. New England suffered most lop-sided defeatin 11 years.  41 – 14.

There is going to be loud music out there. There’s going to be people questioning play calling, personnel grouping.

Stephen Belichick: We took criticism from everybody, everywhere. (3:37)

Newspaper Headlines

Brian Daboll: “It’s entirely possible to see how ineffective the Patriots have been on offense over the first four weeks.

Dave DeGulielmo: And suggest that they are fatally flawed and there is somethnig horribly wrong with them to the extent that even Tom Brady and Bill Belichick can’t fix it,

Chad O’Shea: It was also worth wondering if the Patriots’ incredible dynasty died at Arrowhead Stadium too.”

Josh McDaniels: That’s how bad the 41 to 14 loss was. The Patriots have never looked this incompetent under the Brady-Belichick era.” Yahoo Sports (4:04)

Robert Kraft: The best part of that is they were telling Tommy that he was all done.

Reporter: Will the quarterback position be evaluated? (Laugh)

Robert Kraft: I mean, there is nothing better that can happen to get his competitive juices going. So, thank you to all the people and media people who did that. (4:28)

Bill Belichick: “When I walked off the field that night, I felt good about this team even though we’ve gotten, you know, smashed. I felt something about the team that night in the second half. That I really thought we could build on. Anybody that wanted to cash it in there could have cashed it in. We weren’t going  to win. We were behind. We were on the road. There crowd was in a frenzy. The chiefs were playing very well. But I could see the fight. I could see the team’s emotions in the game. I felt good. We weren’t going to win. I could see the fight. I felt good about their toughness and competitiveness. They played with a purpose and cared about each other. If we have this, then in the end we are gonna have a chance.” (5:08)

Narrator: He was right. The Patriots won another Division title.

Bill Belichick: “Alright so look. This gives us a chance. It just gives us a chance. Puts us in position. CongratulationsAFC East Champs. We will see you Wednesday” (5:22)

Narrator: But to ensure a job well done, they needed to win their first Super Bowl in the decade and raise a fourth championship banner.

When we return…

Bill Belichick: It was the same play that we ran against the Colts in 01 with David Patton. (5:42)

Narrator: CHESS: If coaching is a chess match, Bill Belichick is the NFL’s Bobby Fisher. Before the Patriots knew their playoff opponent, Belichick was already crafting the end game.

Chad O’Shea: TRICK OFFENSIVE PLAY: During the bye week he brought myself, Josh McDaniels, and Brian Daboll in his office to talk to us about having something different that we might need in the postseason to help us win a football game.

Bill Belichick:  Tennessee had a play on the last play of the game where they put four skill players in at guard and tackle.

Everybody but the center. Get the line out.

I’ve never seen this. The only offensive lineman that is in the game right now I believe is Spencer.

Bill Belichick: When I saw the play I thought to myself, that’s something you see on a punt team. That’s always a problem for us to identify, who’s who. who’s eligible? Because you don’t want them to sneak somebody out and fake punt you and that kind of thing but it’s hard to match up.

And a lot of times, the officials aren’t going to say this… It goes kinda fast and defensively you just kinda of have to figure it out. (7:00)

Josh McDaniels: As an offensive staff, we went in there and we discussed the general idea of displacing some people using a four-man line.

Update

Bill Belichick: If we split and “ineligible” receiver, like Vareen, it will be hard not to cover him just instinctively Ok forget about him.

Josh McDaniels: (Alabama vs. LSU play). Derrick Henry… We showed it to the team. (7:47)

Announcer:

Bill Belichick: We talked to NFL officials about reporting and making sure we did everything legal about our alignments and reported correctly. and that is how we practiced it.

Narrator: … called BALTIMORE: The play remained uncalled until the Patriots fell behind 28-14 in the 3rd quarter

Bill Belichick: … let’s go with Baltimore and see if we can get a play here and get something going.”

Dave DeGulielmo: It was the 1st time in career we only had 4 offensive lineman on the field.

Narrator: declared himself an ineligible receiver, but still lined up in the slot. The Ravens left him uncovered.

Bill Belichick: RAVEN: If this works the 1st time, if we have like a different look on this the 2nd time, they are going to have trouble with that too. So, we changed the formation a little and made it “Raven.”

Narrator:  (10:04) the other side of the field.

Bill Belichick: The Rules: “There is really no doubt about the rule. It is not a violation of the rules. It is just a tough look I would say.”

Josh McDaniels: We waited until 2nd half, purposefully, so they didn’t have time an opportunity at halftime to talk about it. (10:37)

Announcer John Haughbuagh is livid.

Bill Belichick: We figured now they are going to have to go to the sideline. Now they have to talk about it. Now the next series we are not gonna run it. Maybe that will distract them a little bit.

Dave DeGulielmo:

Bill Belichick: Double Pass: We are down 7, Josh and I looked at each other and said “Let’s go with double pass.” (Edelman)

Josh McDaniels:

Josh McDaniels:We went away from letting anybody other than Tom Brady throw the ball. We had another time we let somebody else (Gronk) throw the ball and it was intercepted.  Staff meeting “Never again, with Tom Brady, will we have No Body OTHER than Brady is going to pass the ball.”

Bill Belichick: Edelman can throw. It’s has been a decade, maybe, let’s give Edelman a chance. (How many quarterbacks play 10 years with one team?)

Character & Having fun: Edelman who have ice on his shoulder “Gotta take care of my arm.” (12:44)

Chad O’Shea: Being SUPER prepared: NOT SHOWING THE DOUBLE PASS  – We do In hindsight if we do not have the players execute NOT RUNNING the double pass, we would not have had the double pass to use. Everybody on the same page (wouldn’t have been available vs. Baltimore).

What a play call!

Narrator: AFC Championship Preparation Patriots vs. Colts

The staff revisited from a week #11 Victory.

We are trying to control the ball and finish in the end zone.

Dave DeGulielmo: We used an extra lineman to hammer them in the run game.

Dave DeGulielmo:

Announcer Cameron Fleming Jumbo Tight End (extra tackle) “They are blowing the Colts off the ball.”

Narrator: Jonas Gray helped defeat the Colts with 201 yards and 4 touchdowns. Blount A change in running back did not result in a change in game plan.

Dave DeGulielmo: It was the SAME approach.

Zolak: School Bully

POUND THE BALL: “Pound the frigging ball. That’s all. Just pound the ball.”

Zolak: “Blunt force trauma has returned to the playoffs.”

Matt Patricia: NO BIG PLAYS Kyle Arrington on Hilton.

Bill Belichick:

Brian Flores: The key match up was Devon over the top. I think he only caught one ball. And they made a helluva throw and catch. “Welcome to my world.”

Colt Reciver “Welcome to my world.”

Narrator:UNORTHODOX FORMATION: The Patriots caught their opponents off-guard with UNORTHODOX FORMATION: Tackle eligible (Nate Solder)

Dave DeGulielmo: He looks like he is the tackle although technically he is eligible. Nobody covered him.

Announcer: “,,, Touchdown Patriots”

Bill Belichick: NEXT GAME: 45 – 7. I only have one more thing to say: “We are on to Seattle!”

Jonathan Kraft: We chalked it up to sour grapes at the time.

BREAK

Nightline DE-FLATGATE: “Did they deflate footballs to gain an advantage.

Josh McDaniels: “At 1st I didn’t give it too much thought. Is this going to be a story.”

It is a media frenzy and tremendous distraction. (UNH Deflategate Class)

Director of Football: They just needed them.”

Josh McDaniels: ..Is this going to be a story?”

“A good football team has got to be like a race horse, blinders on.”

Josh Boyer:

GAME PLAN WEEK:

Dave DeGulielmo: He told the team. Don’t focus on this.

Josh McDaniels: It was a game plan week for us. …. to help us win a World Championships.

For three straight days he is dealing with THE BALL. He wants to be in the film room

Bill Belichick: “…. I saw at that point theie was big discrepancies between the gauges.”

It was consistent. We used multiple gauges. I saw at that point there was a big discrepancies between gauage.

Bill Belichick: Press Conference: “I am not a scientist. I am not an expert of measurements. I am just telling you what I know. I would not say I am the Mona Lisa Vito of the football world as she was in the car expertise area.

Movie Clip: My Cousin Vinnie (20:50)

My Cousin Vinnie WATCH THE MOVIE “I have seen the movie 50 times. She was the best all-time great expert witness. (Also White Men Can’t Jump!) I wasn’t try to be that.

Everett High School clapping the Patriots to plane.

Narrator:

Jonathan Kraft:

Robert Kraft: “If the Wells Investigation…. The would expect and hope the league would apologize to our entire team and in particular Coach Belichick and Tom Brady for what they have had to endure this past week.”

A lot of the players came up and thanked me. They felt that shifted the whole dialogue of the following week.

Bill Belichick: focus. Have a helluva night.

Narrator: Lost a chance of an undefeated season.

Bill Belichick: Get Focused on our job (7 years ago. This time Bill Belichick was not asking his team to be perfect. It is  “Do Your Job!” The one thing that is not state is Do your Job well. Take care of the one or two, three things we have emphasized all week. focused on.

Our main focus was to eep Wilson in the pocket,

D line

Not let him run and make plays with his feet. Make him throw with guys around him- brought in back up quarterbacks and running QBs.

Matt Patricia: Make sure we are not past the quarter back. Keep him in front of us. Don’g rusth Rush controlled with the under. At some point this play turns intoa run.

Bill Belichick: Good hands, Good Leverage Good Pad level. Good job on the quarterback. (Probably taught in pre-season)

Narrator: 1st half completed only 4 passes (Wilson) and ran for only

Ernie Adams:

  1. BLOCK BENNETT #72: Offensively we had to block a fabulous player Block Michael Bennett (72). The truth is we did not block him all day. Tom did a good job of getting rid of the ball. Tom Brady: “Good hit #72!”
  2. DEFEND OUR QUICKNESS: Bill Belichick: Don’t run vertical routes, run moving routes, crossing routes. Force their defense to cover our quickness. Julian Edelman: “Don’t let me get quick on you.”
  3. Recognize the difference between man and zone. Whether that’s by formation, or by motion or pre-snap read. Whatever it is.”

Narrator: The best example of that…. Isolate Gronk: Final drive of 1st half.

Josh McDaniels: They found a way to isolate Gronkowski. Tom Brady: “Right Trigger left wide” We did it from a a formation that left Gronk alone.. It’s one of those things we were rolling the dice. I hope they play man coverage. If they didn’t play man coverage, Sherman would be on him. When we broke the huddle and Sherman came over to the other side of the field and Wright out to him. I thonk everybody on our sideline knew where it was gonna go. (26:12)

Zolak: “Bump & Run on a 6 foot 6 tight end! All day long baby!!!” Zolak

Narrator: But the lead wouldn’t last. In the 4th quarter the Patriots trailed by 10 points.

Tom Brady:

Dave DeGulielmo: I NEVER WORRY because we have Tom Brady ,The Ninja. The bottom line is you give him time – he will make things happen. Nobody’s better. 24 – 21

Announcer: Touchdown New England

Dave DeGulielmo: Fight! That’s what makes you guys. The continuous fight. Keep going. You got a lot of football to play. Guys are making plays because you are giving them a chance.

Announcer: Brady missed the throw.

Tom Brady: Big championship drive.

Josh McDaniels: Brady missed the throw. “Tommy just missed it.” “That was a great call comeback to that again.” TB 12

Come back to that again.

4th Quarter Drive: We need a Big championship drive. That’s what we need.”

Narrator: In a quarter in which he completed 13 of 15 passes for 124 yards. The final score came on a play he had already run… But is was a play he and his teammates had never practiced.

Chad O’Shea: That play was put in a ballroom. Saturday Night Walkthrough: It was a  play he and his teammates have never practiced.

Discussion: Why last minute? All pre-season, season, playoffs… interesting.

Josh McDaniels: Saturday Night Walkthrough: OK You got it!.

Narrator: Having the courage to draw up a play at the 11th hour might win you a Super Bowl. But as the Patriots It is the plays that no one can imagine that can lose you one.

Jonathan Kraft: “DID HE JUST CATCH THAT?” Crazy plays:

It is the play that no one can imagine that can lose you the game. Incredible catch. Responses of the coaches and Kraft.

Jonathan Kraft:History repeating itself. Can you believe this? Helpless on the sideline “Did he just catch that?”

History Repeating Itself: When the Kearse catch happened at the same end of the field as. It was

Disbelief: “Here we go again.” “In this place again?”

Robert Kraft: “We have no f$%*ing luck.”

Josh McDaniels: “The D’s gotta make a play.” (Players make players)

# “That is Crazy Yo!

Narrator: MALCOM BUTLER (how times have changed): What is really crazy is that Malcom Butler was on the field at this point in the game. The rookie free agent who has on interceptions and 4 pass deflections.

“They benched #25. 21 in”

What is crazy they benched Kyle Arrington.

Bill Belichick: “He is a streaky player and sometimes when they catch a couple In Baltimore with TY Hilton. on him, then he just doesn’t play his technique, maybe over thinks it a bit. He plays it conservative.”

Narrator: Defensive Adjustments “the answer” Move Browner into coverage on #13 Chris Matthews, who caught just one pass for 9 yards) switch – 1 catch the rest of the game.

Matt Patricia: They are going to come after  him.

Big plays He could not have played this better. “None of his heroics seemed to matter after the

Matt Patricia: The Rub: beat, make sure the ball is out. technique

Announcer: He could not have played this better.

Narrator:

Malcom covered Kearse. Analysis of his play, video review.

1:06 to play

Brendan Daly: HIGHTOWER: Unbelievable play by Hightower. The most unsung, but the biggest play of the Super Bowl. From up in the box it looked was wide open. It WAS wide open.

Patrick Graham: “Have you seen this play? How in the world did you do this?” He bench presses Okun off of him and he tackles Lynch with his shoulder.”

Bill Belichick: TIMEOUT: “I knew they only had one timeout left. When I looked over there something didn’t look right, They started on they started off. However many seconds have gone by. Alringht. I am not going to take them off the hook by taking the timeout. If they want to use it, let them use it. And MAtt said. Do you want the timeout.”

Matt Patricia: It was a very lonely moment: He was staring across the field.

Patrick Graham: “Bill they are wondering about the time out?… That’s the genius. Yeah. I got it. Like we were in the meeting room right now.

Bill Belichick: No just play goal line.

Josh Boyer: Different goal line packages – We have 3 corners out there.

Brendan Daly: It was the 1st time we used this personnel group all year…. Thank God we had it.

Brian Flores: As a young coach you think it is nover going to come up. Here it is in the biggest game of our loves. Thankfully Bill is forward thinker. No stone goes unturned. We were all ready for it.

Brendan Daly: “Flow send Malcom. “Malcom go!”

Matt Patricia: Communication: Browner is telling him exactly what he was going to do. Let me get up here and jam the point him and you go.

Bill Belichick: Coaching Point: Practice Butler had seen it in practice. He just did not stop it. It was just too much space. The COACHING POINT WAS If they are close enough together you have to be ready to go over the top AND the defender on the inside guy has to jam him so he can’t pick.

Narrator: The fact… It was a credit to Ernie Adams.

Bill Belichick: “You are gonna win or lose games at practice.” Ernie Adams would diagram plays that either he thought they might run against us or he had seen from a previous game.

Ernie Adams: We put all these plays on cards (old school). “You are gonna win or lose games at practice. There is no such thing as being a game-day player. You see situations that on practice. When it comes up in the game, because you are trained, your seasoned, you’ve seen it you react and you make the play.

The WHOLE NATION is watching. Where is Lynch?

What happened?

Announcer: Made the play of the year.

Ernie Adams: Malcom but we do try make sure we are ready for anything that is gonna come up on Sunday.

Patrick Graham: Jamie, Chung Malcom… We went through it with everybody.

REACTIONS

Brendan Daly: Matt – Somewhere in disbelief to concern it isn’t real. “We’re good, right?” He caught it. He caught it.

Ivan Fears “I was gonna have a heart attack out there. It was awesome. Just flat out awesome.

It was a feeling like I never had.

Josh McDaniels: You are not gonna have that feeling many times in LIFE. I remember turning around and seeing Tom’s face. He looked liked a child.

I know how hard he works. And how much time he puts in. It was worth it. It was awesome. (39:05)

Matt Patricia: “As much stress and pressure as possible could imagine. I don’t think you really could be any prouder.

Announcer: Cap with a perfect ending.

BLUE GATORADE Prop Bets

Josh McDaniels: You dream about that happening as a coach. To actually realize it is happening, it is surreal. I will remember this forever.

Matt Patricia: I describe the 1st time I held the Lombardie Trophy VIVID MEMORY: It is probably the most vivid memory, It is heavy on the top. It is going to be really dirty.

We bonded for life with that win. That is a family atmosphere.

Josh McDaniels: “I Love You:”

Josh McDaniels: It was raw. It was real. It was unique for other people to see it, although it wasn’t unique for us to hear it.  We have gone well past I am too proud to tell you I love you.

Ernie Adams: Brendan Daly:  Robert Kraft: Narrator: Bill Belichick: Matt Patricia: Brian Flores: Josh McDaniels: Chad O’Shea: Josh Boyer: Brian Daboll: Stephen Belichick: Dave DeGulielmo: Ivan Fears

Dave DeGulielmo: It is ok. “I love you. I will do anything for you. And that is why the New England Patriots win football games.

Robert Kraft: I want to thank the players and coaches. “We are all Patriots.” Kraft “We are all Patriots. And tonight, once again the Patriots are World Champions.”

Bill Belichick: LOVE: I love you. We sacrificed a lot for each other. I am happy for all of them. I am very happy for all of them.

Josh McDaniels: It shows you how unselfish he is. It is just another example of how tremendous a leader.

Bill Belichick: We have a great team. A lot of great players. I love these guys.

GREATEST YEAR OF MY LIFE: Thanks for giving me the best year of my life!

How tremendous a leader he is. We have a great team. Belichick Sure did with these guys. “”I love these guys!

Bill Belichick: It’s a players game. They are the ones who make it possible. The game is between the lines. They have to make the plays. With their decisions, with their execution. It is hard. The short amount of time they have to make decisions on plays. That’s why pro football players are pro players. I have all the respect in the world for those guys who can do that.. My high school coach, I’ll never foget him talking about “Players win ’em and coaches loses ’em.”  And there is a lot of truth to that.

It is hard in the short amount of time to make decisions. I have all the respect in the world.”

Narrator: The real truth is that this team won together because each man did his job. If I do my job, I am very confident the guys are going to their I will do what I have to do. Then that’s my contribution to the team.

What is the closest team you have been part of?
