What is March Madness? In college basketball it is their signature event. Read here to find out how it got its name.
The March Madness of teaching. March is a long stretch with zero days off. At the high school level, it is during the heart of the playoffs, with so much excitement and disappointment.
It also is the transition from winter season to the spring sports season. The 1st two weeks are filled with so many hopes and dreams and for a few athletes, the disappointment of being cut, placed on a sub-varsity team, or possibly suffering a serious injury. March is a challenging time to say the least, especially at the high school level.
Students who have spent weeks and possibly years in the college application process will be receiving acceptance and rejection letters. So the mental health of many of these students can be fragile with all the highs and lows. Oh and don’t forget, graduation day is looming on the horizon.
With so many teaching challenges during March, if might be wise and necessary for a teacher to schedule a mental health day or two during all this madness.
It is always important to be able to survive the highs and lows of a school year. It is not easy and although, we do not want teachers to abuse their sick time, we also do not want them to put themselves in a compromised mental state.
So take the days if you need them. If you’re on the fence, take them. Very few school systems reward teachers for attendance and if you happen to be in a system where you get compensated at retirement, one day it’s not gonna make a difference.
Schedule, relaxing assignments or student centered learning. High school teachers that have different preps they want to plan a student centered learning activity where a teacher can offer for guidance and not be on stage.
At the high school level, leaning in to the madness with a March madness assignment might be worth the investment in planning it carefully.
