We always try to incorporate U2 into as many as lessons as possible. But when teaching 9/11

  1. The Stage is heart shaped. Let’s start with this. I know this was their tour set, but what a message.
  2. The Songs: The lyrics are listed below.
  3. The Performance: The banner of names. The American flag in Bono’s jacket.
  1. Promotional Introduction (0:00 – 0:48)
  2. A Beautiful Day (0:49 – 5:00)
    • (0:49 – 1:35) Bono walking through the crowd to the stage
    • (1:35 – 5:04)
    • Cheering (5:00 – 5:10)
  3. MLK (5:11 – 6:10) Tha start of the banner with all the names of victims of 9/11 by location and category. It is an incredible list of close to 3,000 names. This is a short but powerful song.
  4. Where The Streets Have No Name (6:11
    • (6:57 – 7:01) Bono Says America and holds the microphone to the crowd.
    • (7:02 – 7:12) Bono holds the word “Ohhh”
    • (7:18 – 7:28) Bono starts to jog around the heart shaped stage.
    • (7:28 – 7:34) Bono breaks into a full speed sprint to the center of the stage.
    • (10:09 – 10:16) The banner of names falls to the ground. Bono sings “Love, Love, Love” holding a heart just below his chest. What an amazing message after the tragic event filled with so much hate.
    • (11:07 – 11:30) Bono opens his jacket to the crowd and the WORLD! What a moment! What a show of support. Is there anyone better that U2?

A Beautiful Day

[Verse 1]

The heart is a bloom,

shoots up through the stony ground

There’s no room, no space to rent in this town

You’re out of luck, and the reason that you had to care

The traffic is stuck, and you’re not moving anywhere

You thought you’d found a friend to take you out of this place

Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace

[Chorus]

It’s a beautiful day

Sky falls, you feel like

It’s a beautiful day

Don’t let it get away

[Verse 2]

You’re on the road, but you’ve got no destination

You’re in the mud, in the maze of her imagination

You love this town even if that doesn’t ring true

You’ve been all over, and it’s been all over you

[Chorus]

It’s a beautiful day

Don’t let it get away

It’s a beautiful day

Ooh-hoo-hoo

[Post-Chorus]

Touch me

Take me to that other place

Teach me

I know I’m not a hopeless case

[Bridge]

See the world in green and blue

See China right in front of you

See the canyons broken by cloud

See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out

See the Bedouin fires at night

See the oil fields at first light

And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth

After the flood all the colours came out

[Chorus]

It was a beautiful day

Don’t let it get away

Beautiful day

[Post-Chorus]

Touch me

Take me to that other place

Reach me I know I’m not a hopeless case

[Outro]

What you don’t have you don’t need it now

What you don’t know you can feel it somehow

What you don’t have you don’t need it now

Don’t need it now

Was a beautiful day

MLK Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Sleep, sleep tonight

And may your dreams be realised

If the thunder cloud passes rain

So let it rain, rain down on he

Mmm, so let it be Mmm, so let it be

[Verse 2]

Sleep, sleep tonight

And may your dreams be realised

If the thunder cloud passes rain

So let it rain, let it rain

Rain on he

Where the Streets Have

[Verse 1]

I wanna run, I want to hide

I wanna tear down the walls that hold me inside

I wanna reach out and touch the flame

Where the streets have no name (Ah, ah, ah)

[Verse 2]

I wanna feel sunlight on my face

I see the dust cloud disappear without a trace

I wanna take shelter from the poison rain

Where the streets have no name, yeah (Oh, huh)

[Chorus]

Where the streets have no name

Where the streets have no name

We’re still building, then burning down love

Burning down love

And when I go there I go there with you

It’s all I can do

[Verse 3]

The city’s a flood, and our love turns to rust

We’re beaten and blown by the wind, trampled in dust

I’ll show you a place high on a desert plain (Yeah)

Where the streets have no name (Ah, ha)

[Chorus]

Where the streets have no name

Where the streets have no name

We’re still building, then burning down love

Burning down love

And when I go there I go there with you

It’s all I can do

[Outro]

Our love turns to rust

We’re beaten and blown by the wind

Blown by the wind

Oh, and I see love See our love turn to rust

Ah, we’re beaten and blown by the wind

Blown by the wind

Oh, when I go there I go there with you

It’s all I can do

One option could be U2. U2 performed with George Harrison from London. This shows the worldwide and international impact of the event and the concern of international artists for America.
