Rick Carlisle was a sharp shooter who played college basketball at the University of Virginia. He played 5 years in the NBA. He currently coaches the Indiana Pacers. He is one of 13 Individuals who has won an NBA title as a player and a coach.

When Rick Carlisle was a member of the Boston Celtics, he spoke at a youth camp in Massachusetts. We talked about the fundamentals of shooting. He used the BEEF shooting technique, stressed staying square of the basket and spoke about all the finer details of being a great shooter.

He then proceeded to go through his shooting workout or shooting warm-up. He started in close shooting with two hands and made 10 shots in a row. After making 10 shots in a row, he took a step back. He continued this process until he got to his range, which was the NBA three-point line.

I’m not sure if this is officially called the Rick Carlisle Basketball Shooting Drill, but I think these drills carry a little more weight when successful players and coaches complete them. One of the biggest problems with basketball players is not understanding what their shooting range. Any player can make a point from the three-point line. But how many can make five or ten in a row?

We define range as the spot where a player can make five in a row consistently. Very few players have a good understanding of their shooting range because they do not know how to define it. ALL PLAYERS shoot outside their range, but is it important for It’s OK if a player to be aware of what his range is exactly..

The goal during summer in terms of shooting the basketball should be very simple.

  1. become a more accurate shooter
  2. with greater range.

We know there are so many different types of shooting drills. There are YouTube video clips of shooting workouts, shooting from a chair, shooting on one foot. and lots of other crazy drill. We like to keep it simple stupid approach.

Rick Carlisle‘s drill is very basic. Make 10 shots in a row if you cannot make 10 shots in a row you can’t move back and when you definitely know you cannot make 10 shots in a row. You should not be shooting that far out so this drill accomplishes two goals number one it forces players to keep track of how many makes. It also lets them know when a shot is too far from their range. Each level of Basketball shot selection becomes more and more understanding. A players role is also critical. Not every basketball player has to be a shooter. Teams need rebounders defenders facilitators. But if you are going to be a shooter, very important to be consistent, making 10 shots in the road consistently
