Youth Basketball: Travel Team Tryout Drills

Grades 4 – 6 tryouts
Objectives:

To evaluate the dribbling, lay-ups, shooting, and overall skills of the players.

Use a 1 – 4 scale, 1 is the best. Keep in mind the number of players trying out. 1 = top 25%, 2 = top 50%, etc.
0:00 – 5:00 Shooting Knockout* See who can shoot and make lay-ups. Players who are knocked out go to lay-up basket. Record winners. See who finalists are.
Dribbling: Evaluate how comfortable the players are with the basketball!
5:00 – 15:00 Dribble lines: ball drills and full court dribbling drills.
15:00 – 20:00 3 trips, Dribble walk, Dribble March
20:00 – 25:00 2 ball series (together & alternating)
Lay-ups: Complete a series of timed lay-ups / record TEAM scores
25:00 – 35:00 7 timed lay-up drills (10.5 minutes)
SHOOTING: split the players up at baskets record EACH Score 4 – 6 scores total (When a player finishes – SPRINT to coach to tell score.)
35:00 – 45:00 Mini-Mikans / Star drill (:30 seconds each drill 2-3Xs).
45:00 – 55:00 Spot shooting (5 sports 1:30 each spot / 7.5 mins)
TRANSITION DRILLS: #1 Goal = Stop the ball / 2 sides of the court ball side / help side / BASKETLINE
55:00 – 60:00 Half court touch 2 v.1, 2 v. 2
60:00 – 70: numbers game / scrimmage
70:00 – 75:00 Range finder / 2 hands **
IF TIME: range finder for 5 minutes make 5 IN A ROW move back miss 2 in a row step in.
* If players arrive early, they can start knockout ASAP. Als
** If we can steal 5 – 10 minutes at the end, have the players complete Range finder for longer
