No matter what grade a child is in, it is imperative to begin the second half of the school year with renewed motivation and a positive attitude. It is not fair, however, to expect students to be able to do this without proper structure and support from the parent(s). Below are examples on how you can help your child improve grades for the last half of the school year. 1.     It’s time for a NOTEBOOK OVERHAUL- Be prepared to have your eyes pop out of your head when you see what the inside of a student backpack or notebook truly reveals. You will witness crumpled paper, torn sheets, and disorganized worksheets without dates, student names, or subjects indicated. This is one of the greatest reasons that students have trouble being organized and effective in school. THEY CAN’T FIND THEIR WORK! Whenever possible, try to have loose-leaf binders available with no more than two or three subjects per binder. (Some teachers only want spiral notebooks so you must adhere to their rules) Divider labels are needed in the following possible categories. Class Work, Homework, Tests and Quizzes. If all work is dated, then your child will now be able to find work chronologically and study properly. Also, children should have a hole puncher available for ALL worksheets given so teacher handouts can be placed in the appropriate section. (Purchase reinforcements as well). 2.     Parent / Teacher Communication is Essential-In a perfect world, teachers would be able to call each and every parent often to discuss ways for children to improve their grades, Unfortunately, teachers have many students and this will never be achieved consistently. You must email, phone, or visit your child’s teacher(s) and determine what was done the first semester and what the teachers’ expectations are for your child to succeed the rest of the year. Keep notes and make sure you ask what you can do to support your child in his or her success in school. This method creates what I like to call the TRIANGLE of Educational Success. We need the School, the Parent, and the Student all involved together in order for children to reach their full potential. 3.     Time can be the enemy, or the HERO-Adults have difficulty with time management so just imagine what student challenges exist with soccer, cheerleading, band, and the SUPERVILLIANS …..PLAYSTATION AND X-Box! Fun and breaks from work are a must but you need to set aside time when children will do their school work. A break is needed when they first arrive home from school. They should NEVER work for more than twenty minutes at a time. Even a sponge needs to be wrung out once in a while. I suggest twenty minutes of studying and then a five minute break AWAY from the study area. Then, upon return to work, MAKE SURE CHILDREN REVIEW the first twenty minutes of studying and THEN move on to new work or new material. Learning does NOT take place during the initial studying process….it takes place during REVIEW. Hopefully these strategies will place your child on the path to a successful 2012! Children can become frustrated very easily when Mom and Dad are the ones trying to help with school work.  They are more likely to fight assistance and suggestions than having someone come in and help them.  Although I know tutoring may not be something you’ve set aside money for, your child’s educational success is important and is always worth the venture.  Tutoring is a smart investment in your child’s future, and will help ease the stress that students face at school when they struggle with one or more of the following:
Standardized testing: Unfortunately, as much as we all cringe when he hear this phrase, is it still a reality; many states require students in certain grades to pass these tests in order to be promoted to the next grade.  Otherwise, you may find your child in summer school to repeat the test, or he/she may have to repeat the grade without the hope of remediation.  Believe me when I tell you that your child MUST have the necessary skills to pass these types of tests.  Mastering standardized testing skills is no easy feat and is not the same as having classroom testing skills.  Tutors can help your child decipher test questions, learn how to weed out possible answers, and how to look back into a passage to verify information.
Reading Skills: I do not need to tell you how critical reading skills are, do I?  If your student struggles in any way with vocabulary development, reading comprehension, fluency, etc. then you should consider a tutor’s help.  Teachers who specialize in reading will come with a whole bag of tricks to truly help to make reading enjoyable and easier for your student.  Reluctant readers are usually this way because they are lacking in one of the areas that lead to genuine understanding of what they’re reading.  Teachers can find these barriers and break through them to help even the most struggling of readers.
Writing assessments: Another form of standardized testing, writing assessments are commonly scored in numerous grade levels all through public k-12 schools.  Your child can benefit from additional writing practice with a tutor who can help them refine ideas, use vivid descriptions, and follow persuasive, expository, or narrative formats.  Each format requires a different set of writing skills (although clearly some overlap) and understanding how and when to apply these skills is something many students struggle with.
Organization/note taking/study skills: I cannot tell you how many students are lacking in this area: I would venture to say as many as 60% of students struggle in this arena.  We cannot assume that children will automatically develop good habits when it comes to organization, study, and note taking skills.  Again, these are skills that must be taught to ensure success- and the younger, the better.  Raise your hand if your student struggles in one of these categories.  See- exactly.  I consider these three categories key to a student’s overall educational success.  In addition, being on top of their game with these skills will save time, frustration, and energy as time goes on!  Let a tutor help, please!
Math Skills: Similar to reading skills, need I remind you of the importance of having strong math skills?  As we become more and more dependent on computers and everything else digitized to solve our problems, our nation’s math scores continue to plummet.  That being said, math teachers are experts in their field and will bring to the table ideas and strategies you never even knew existed.  – A menagerie of math web sites, tricks, and tools that were not around when we were in school.  Not only that, but when a child is frustrated with something as complex as math, an impartial person can be the voice of reason is a sea of insane confusion.
If you feel your child is having trouble with any of the above, have no fear.  Tutors are quickly able to ascertain how your child best learns, and where they’re losing ground.  They can close the learning gap helping your student feel more confident at school and ease tension at home.  Go ahead, chose a tutor and be on your way to SUCCESS.

    Writing Advice for College Students
The financial reality facing teachers is that many must find additional sources of income in order to stay in the profession they love. Over the years, I have seen too many teachers leave the teaching profession because they simply needed to earn more money. It is so sad to see this happen.
    Please Share!

I would like to offer a few ideas on possible ways teachers can earn additional money to supplement their teaching salary. 1. Take Classes - It is important to know your school’s pay scale. Many schools offer a pay incentive for a teacher to earn an advanced degree. For example, a school may have different pay based on level of education. Some common "steps" are: bachelor’s degree, bachelor’s plus 15 credits (5 classes), bachelor’s plus 30 credits, Masters degree, etc. The difference in pay is usually very significant, especially in the later years of teaching. The difference between a bachelor’s degree and Masters with 30 graduate credits is several THOUSAND dollars a year. 2. Teach a Course - Many colleges and teaching programs are looking for teachers as part-time instructors. Undergraduate courses in your discipline, such as math, science or computers is one possibility. The other option would be to teach teachers. In Massachusetts, a teacher needs to maintain certification. In order to do this, a teacher must earn so many “Professional Development Points” or PDPs. To satisfy the demand for “teaching courses” local teachers ofter serve as instructors. Two great programs on the South Shore are the denty connection and JonLJenMarc. Several teachers in our district teach in these programs. 3. Work a Summer Job - For a teachers, the summer is a great time reflect, read, and work on professional development. “3 reasons to become a teacher - June, July, and August” is a funny saying about our profession. The reality is,however, that so many teachers do not take these months off. Many find work in the service industry, landscaping, painting, retail, and some work security guards at the Marshfield Fair (see our earlier blog post). If possible, get a summer job you enjoy. Work with children at a summer camp. See if you can offer a program for your local recreation department. 4. Coach - Anyone who has coached, knows you do not do it for the money. Even if the stipend is several thousand dollars, the hourly pay is often equivalent to a low-paying hourly job. Most high school sports require additional time commitments beyond the school year. Fall sports start a few weeks before the first classes, winter sports often have games and practices during two school vacations, and the spring season has a school vacation, in addition to possibly competing after high school graduations. As a former three-sport coach, I would encourage as many teachers as possible to give coaching a try. It is a great opportunity to connect with students in a way you cannot in the classroom. (But don’t do it for the money) 5. Tutor - For many disciplines, this is an amazing way to make great money. You can schedule you time and your hourly rate. Parents love teachers who tutor. They know “Teachers are great tutors!”

  • The Best 50 Cents a Teacher Could Invest!

My Town Tutors is the first NATIONAL website that ONLY lists teachers who tutor. It is designed to make it easy for parents to connect with local teachers who tutor.
    We have 2 simple objectives:
    1. To be the BEST resource for parents who are looking for tutors!
    2. To help teachers who tutor make money!
Last fall we tested My Town Tutors on the South Shore of Massachusetts. The response was incredible! Teachers, parents, students, and guidance counselors loved it. Our goal now is provide the same great service to school communities in every state.
To celebrate our expansion and to encourage teachers from all over the country to register, we are offering a 2-year membership for only $12. That is the only cost to the teacher. 50 cents a month! (A very low cost for the opportunity to make several thousand dollars a year.)
There are no tricks. No other gimmicks.
Our entire service is based on one simple belief…. “Teachers are great tutors!” We only list teachers. No one else!
In order to be the best, we need to recruit the best. So we came up with our special promotion of $12 for a two year membership. We want to give teachers a raise, by allowing them to keep 100% of their tutoring fees.
The more teachers who sign-up for our service, the more valuable we are to parents.
    What is the catch?
This rate is a special, limited introductory offer that will expire on January 1, 2012. We promise to keep our fees low, however after this date, we will be charging a one time registration fee of $10 in addition to the $12 for a one year membership, not two years!
We want to be transparent with our service and fees. So to break it down per month.
Sign-up date            registration fee    membership fee  monthly fee
    Before January 1, 2012    $0            $12 for 2 years        $0.50
    After January 1, 2012        $10            $12 for 1 year            $1.84
$0.50 a month? What can we say? “We love teachers and parents!”
Be the first teacher in your area to register. What do you have to lose? 50 cents a month? A better question might be what do you have to gain? $30 – $85 an hour (a teacher sets the hourly fee) and the potential to earn several thousand dollars over a school year.
If you visit our website and search for a tutor in Quincy, Massachusetts, zip code 02169, you can see how it works.
If you have any questions, feel free to email – mark@mytowntutors.com.

  • US Teachers: It Easy to Add a School for My Town Tutors!

My Town Tutors is making a huge commitment for the 2014 2015 school year to be the #1 tutoring resource for parents and teachers in America. Our motto is “Teachers are great tutors!” Parents love the fact that every teacher in our directory is a teacher!
    Please Share!

My Town Tutors is the first NATIONAL website that ONLY lists teachers who tutor. It is designed by a teacher to make it easy for a parent to connect with a local teacher who tutors.
MyTownTutors has a listing of over 100,000 elementary, middle, junior, and high schools in America. It is truly an amazing list! Unfortunately, most private schools and charter schools are not currently listed in our database. This was a huge problem, because we know there are so many non-public school teachers who are great tutors. It was critical for MyTownTutors to be able to quickly and easily add a new school to our database.
During the past few months, My Town Tutors has been working with Divstrong Productions to make it easy for a technology challenged teacher (me) to add a school easily and effectively. With many hours of hard word, Jim Doyle at Divstrong Productions came through BIG!
Now, whenever we receive notification that a school needs to be listed, the school can be added in about 2 minutes. It should take us less than 24 hours to have a school active in our daatabase. This will allow more teachers the opportunity to connect with parents.
Your feedback has lead us to the creation of the “add a school feature.” We have one more piece in place to improve our ability to connect parents with teachers who tutor. We appreciate and VALUE your feedback. We will continue to look to you in the future for advice on how we can reach our goal of becoming the best tutoring resource for both parents and teachers.
We need teachers for all subject areas and grade levels. We need tutors in every state.
Any teacher can register for ONE full year for only $12. There are no other fees for our service. Teachers keep 100% of the tutoring fees.
We started in Massachusetts and are now expanding into all 50 states. If we do not have a tutor in your area, please contact us and we will actively recruit a teacher for your needs.
