    People are nice!
Too often we hear of injustice, crime, and disappointment. One morning recently I was buying a coffee on my way to school. I pulled up to the drive through window, only to be informed that my coffee had been paid for by the women, stranger, in the car ahead of me.
WOW! I was thrilled. The woman in front of me, had just given me, a stranger a $2 cup of coffee. A great example of a Random Act of Kindness.
My question was “What do I do now?”
Option #1 – Say thank you to the worker, and go along my merry way.
Option #2 – Say “thank you” and give the hard-working Dunkin Donuts workers the money I would have used for my coffee as an extra tip.
Option #3 Say “Wow, what an unexpected favor, please apply this money (the money I would have spent) to the order of the people behind me.”
Option #4 Ask the workers “Does this happen often?” And then follow-up, “What have other customers done in this case?” I would have like to have decided on this option to get a little more feedback.
I choose option #3, because I was certainly delighted with my surprise.
I would love to hear feedback from others about similar experiences and the choices they made.
As the school year comes to a close, I am thankful for so many things. As a teacher, we can incorporate some life experiences into our curriculum. Teaching seniors, I do have students who work at Dunkin Donuts. There will be an extra credit assignment for them.
    Lesson: Pay it Forward
    Objectives:
    1. To see how “Paying it Forward” can make a difference in a working shift .
    2. To see the reaction of the customers and record the feedback.
    3. To see if there is a difference in the amount of tips received during the shift.
    Methods
    1. Have student record days of shift, time, and amount of tips – baseline
    2. Donate $10 to the Pay It Forward “bank” or ask students to make a donation.
    3. Have the students start the shift by paying for all or a portion of an order.
    4. Observe how others react. (Worker can influence the decision by providing the 4 options above.)
    Assessment
    1. Compare the amount of “tips” or “tips per hour” between normal shift vs. “Pay It Forward” shift.
    2. Analyze the feedback from the customers. The oral responses.
    3. If there are “regular” customers, ask some more in depth questions.
I would encourage other teachers, especially Sociology teachers to try this activity. We might find that the workers would benefit financially if they took $10 out of their tips and started the ‘Pay it Forward” chain on their own.
I will follow up next year with the results of the activity.
Even better, perhaps a Dunkin Donuts manager might institute this for a day or a week to see the results. I bet they would be amazing!
    Have a great Summer!

  • A Letter to U.S. Teachers

    Dear US Teachers,
My Town Tutors is a website that connects parents with local teachers who tutor. We tested the website in a small area in Massachusetts and have had a great deal of success.
Our goal now is to share this tutoring opportunity with teachers all across America.
My Town Tutors has 3 simple, core beliefs:

    • TEACHERS ARE GREAT TUTORS!

    • PARENTS WANT A GREAT TUTOR FOR THEIR CHILD!

    • TEACHERS SHOULD EARN GREAT MONEY TUTORING!

There are no gimmicks to what we are trying to do. Our goal is to recruit teachers who tutor and connect them with parents looking for tutors.  My Town Tutors currently has 240 teachers registered in Massachusetts. With the help of teachers, we hope to list teachers who tutor in all 50 states by the end of the summer.
With our special promotion, any teacher who tutors can be listed in our directory until September 2014 for only $12. There are no other costs! Teachers keep 100% of the hourly fees!

We are using this blog to share this opportunity with as many American teachers as possible. If you agree “Teachers are great tutors” please share this post via twitter, and facebook.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Have a great summer!
    Sincerely,
    Mark Molloy

  • Georgia Teachers are Great Tutors!

My Town Tutors knows Georgia teachers are great tutors! Our goal is to be the #1 resource in Georgia for parents looking for tutors.
Our core belief is “teachers are great tutors!” We also know tutoring is a great way for teachers to earn $30 – $85 an hour.
Georgia teachers can use their education, experience, knowledge, and training to do what they do best – help students achieve academically. At the same time, these teachers have the flexibility of selecting their own hours and own rate of pay.
Parents benefit because they can find qualified, professional teachers, with unique skills to work with a child. Parents can have complete confidence that the every tutor we list has experience and training working with students who have a variety of learning abilities and styles.
My Town Tutors firmly believes teachers who tutor are a much better alternative for parents than the national tutoring franchises. Many of these companies rarely employ teachers, and if they do, the teachers are grossly underpaid. The national franchise tutors are usually college students who have little, if any, training or experience working with students. Additionally, the cost of these services for parents is insanely high.
Georgia teachers know the curriculum, content, and state standards. More importantly, teachers know children. They understand the learning process and the challenges faced by many students. They speak regularly with other educators and have been trained to use strategies to reach many different learning styles.
The goals of My Town Tutors are really simple.

    1. To make it easy for students and parents to connect with a qualified, local teacher who tutors.
    2. To help teachers who tutor earn additional income with a flexible schedule that fits their schedule.

Last fall, My Town Tutors was tested successfully in the towns south of Boston. Parents and teachers loved it! We now list over 250 teachers who tutor in that area. We are now actively starting our campaign to recruit Georgia teachers who tutor.
My Town Tutors would love to list any Georgia teacher who tutors in our national directory. With our special promotion, teachers can register until September 31, 2014 for only $12. There are no other fees for our service. If a teacher charges $50 an hour, the teacher keeps all $50. It is that simple.
We just started @mytowntutorsga to connect with Georgia teachers and parents. Please follow us for the most recent updates and information about our blog posts.

  • The South Shore's #1 Resource for Tutoring

    Please Share!

My Town Tutors was created in Hanover, Massachusetts in 2009 by a high school teacher with one simple goal – to be a great South Shore tutoring resource for parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. Our motto is “Teachers are great tutors!”
My Town Tutors lists over 250 teachers who tutor, mostly from the South Shore. We make it easy for South Shore parents to connect with a local teacher who tutors.
My Town Tutors has two simple beliefs.
    1. Teachers are great tutors!
    2. Parents want great tutors for their children!
My Town Tutors is a huge hit on the South Shore because we provide a great service to many groups.
Parents and students can find qualified professional teachers, with unique skills to work with their child. Parents can have complete confidence that the each of the tutors we list in this area has experience teaching students with variety of learning abilities and styles.
Teachers who tutor are a great alternative to the national tutoring franchises. Many of these companies rarely employ teachers, and if they do, the teachers are grossly underpaid. The national franchise tutors are usually college students who have no training or experience working with students. Additionally, these companies charge insanely high fees.
Teachers know the curriculum, content, and state standards. More importantly, teachers know children. They understand the learning process and the challenges faced by many students. They speak regularly with other teachers and have been trained to use strategies to reach many different learning styles.
“I have seen incredible progress with my child. He went from a failing grade at mid-term to a B+. I have seen improvement in his grades, but more importantly in his self-esteem.” South Shore 10th grade parent.
Teachers can use their education, experience, knowledge, and training to do what they do best, help students achieve academically. At the same time, these teachers can have the flexibility to select their own hours and own rate of pay.
We list teachers from almost every school district on the South Shore. We currently have several teachers who are tutoring students regularly. We even have two high school math teachers who are turning away students because they are so busy.
“Tutoring is a great way to earn extra money. I enjoy the flexibility of selecting hours that fit my schedule. It is also a great way to connect with a student. It so rewarding to hear with pride a student report an improved grade to me!” South Shore Teacher / Math Tutor
Guidance counselors can take one more thing off their busy plates. Guidance counselors no longer have to ask around to find a tutor for a student. Guidance counselors in the South Shore know that qualified teachers are very capable tutors. Now when a parent inquires about a tutor, the guidance department can refer the person to My Town Tutors.
“My Town Tutors has been a great resource for us. In the past we have had difficulty locating tutors for some subjects. Now we have a database of tutors from the entire South Shore. If we do not have a physics tutor in Hanover, we can connect with a Marshfield High or Holbrook High teacher. It has been a great time saver for us!” Hanover High Guidance Counselor
The goal of My Town Tutors is really simple – to make it easy for students and parents to connect with a qualified, local teacher.
Teachers can register for only $12. With our special promotion, teachers will be listed on My Town Tutors until September 2014.  There are no other fees for our service.
My Town Tutors has been tested successfully in the towns South of Boston. We have added some great new features to our website and are ready to provide our service in every state.
We currently have over 250 teachers registered. Most of our teachers are from the South Shore, but we are currently recruiting teachers from all over Massachusetts. Teachers can sign-up today.
We would love for people to comment on this blog and share your thoughts on our belief that “Teachers are great tutors.”

  • 4 Things to Consider When Hiring a Tutor

    Guest post by Katheryn Rivas
So you’ve decided that some additional outside help will help your child excel in his is her studies. While a tutor can most definitely help your child in this department, it’s important that you realize that not all tutors are the same—just like with clothes, you’re child’s tutor needs to be a perfect “fit.” That said, to learn which tutor is best for your child, below are some areas that you such touch on when interviewing the tutor-for-hire.
    1. Expertise
This one is pretty much a doozie—the tutor has to specialize in the subject being taught. But being certified in a particular area isn’t all that matters—even a professor can be a lousy instructor and tutor. You need to see if the tutor has multi-ways of teaching to relate and adapt to your child’s specific way(s) of learning. Ask the tutor about his or her techniques. For example, what are his or her go-to methods? A great tutor should also be able to explain concepts not only in a direct, matter-of-fact way but also know how to “break it down” and speak in layman’s terms. Can the tutor you’re considering do that?
    2. Success Rate
You also want to know how long your tutor has been in the business and how many students in your child’s specific age group has he or she taught? Also, how many of his or her students actually improved their grades? While the time frame for improvement will vary for each student, there is no harm in asking what was the average time it took for the tutor’s previous student(s) to make higher grades—after all tutoring can get pricey and it’s important you know what you’re getting yourself into if it’ll take several months so you can prepare and get your finances together.
    3. Accessibility
It’s equally important that your tutor makes him or herself easily reachable to your child—this is not to suggest that the tutor you are considering can’t have a life of his or her own, but if your child has a quick question, can he or she be reached via email? Cell phone? Or even social media? Or does the tutor have strict, rigid hours?
    4. Good Connection
Last but certainly not least, it’s important that your child and the tutor have some sort of interaction before committing to a specific tutor. Children do better when they are taught by someone that they like and feel comfortable with. Without chemistry between the two, it can actually make things worse.

  • The Pi Day Challenge is a Slice of Heaven for Math Teachers!

My Town Tutors is making a huge commitment for the 2014 2015 school year to be the #1 tutoring resource for parents and teachers in America. Our motto is “Teachers are great tutors!” Parents love the fact that every teacher in our directory is a teacher!
    Please Share!

The Pi Day Challenge really is a slice of heaven for math teachers.
March 14th (3.14) is the annual celebration of the number pi – 3.1415926. It is a day for math teachers to be creative and use 21st century resources to engage a new generation of math learners. (For more lesson ideas read our recent post 5 Amazing Websites to Prepare for the Pi Day Challenge
The best interactive activity for math enthusiasts to celebrate Pi Day is the Pi Day Challenge! The opening page of the website explains:
“The Pi Day Challenge is a series of puzzles that are logic-based. A team of logicians adapted or created these puzzles – some require research, some require mathematics, some require pure savvy.”
There are 3 easy ways to accept the the Pi Day Challenge:

    1. Sign on with Facebook
    2. Enter an email address and password OR
    3. Register as a guest

The Pi Day Challenge team wants students and adults around the world to be able to participate easily and hassle-free, that is why they created these very convenient and easy to use options.
Teachers can use this 21st Century Learning activity in a variety of ways.
Test your personal knowledge – These activities are very fun and challenging. The puzzles require you to think in a variety of ways. It may be that you judge the the Pi Day Challenge to be a great activity that is level appropriate for your students.
No matter how a math teachers uses this activity, taking the challenge is an amazing opportunity to see how the Pi Day Challenge could be incorporated into your curriculum.
Spend a class period in the computer room – If your school has the technology and availability, and your students have the skill and motivation, spend a class period working together or individually to solve the puzzles. Just step back and watch how students will creatively and cooperatively work to solve the problems.
Solve the problems as a class – Although probably not the most ideal way to engage students, if you have access to a Smart Board / projector, you could complete some of the puzzles as a class. Using this method would work great with smaller class sizes. Perhaps you select a few of the puzzles that are most appropriate for your students’ abilities.
Extra Credit – This is a final alternative if your school is technologically challenged. With this method you will engage your motivated students. You may not reach all your students, however the ones you do emgage will be completely passionate about finding the solutions.
The Pi Day Challenge team uses a variety of ways to track the progress. The genius board is a listing of all the people who have completed the entire challenge.
We have spoken with Matthew Plummer, the creator of the The Pi Day Challenge. We are hoping to have him provide a guest post in the future.
As you can imagine, he and his team are extremely busy right now providing such an incredible resource for the entire mathematical community.
If you enjoy this challenge, please consider making the small donation in celebration of Pi $3.14. He has invested years of his time developing this great challenge. He would love to be able to continue to provide The Pi Day Challenge in the future.

  • Divstrong LLC Adds an Amazing Tutor Location Feature

My Town Tutors is making a huge commitment for the 2014 2015 school year to be the #1 tutoring resource for parents and teachers in America. Our motto is “Teachers are great tutors!” Parents love the fact that every teacher in our directory is a teacher!
    Please Share!

During the past few months, My Town Tutors has been working with Divstrong Productions to add a “tutor location” feature. Many of our teachers expressed the desire for more flexibility in selecting an additional tutor location.  With many hours of hard word, Jim Doyle at Divstrong Productions came through BIG! How does the “tutor location” feature work and what makes it so amazing? My Town Tutors has a database of over 100,000 schools! We have a listing of almost every public school in the United States and many private schools. (My next blog will explain how we can add any school that is not listed in our database.) Originally when a teacher registered, the only option was to select their "teaching school" as the tutoring location. In many cases, this was perfectly fine, however in some cases, this created a huge problem. For example, I am a graduate of Boston College High School in Massachusetts. Teachers from B.C. High live in many different Greater Boston areas. Some live on the South Shore. Others live on the North Shore. Some even live as far as Worcester, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. For these teachers, it might make more sense to tutor in their hometown (or state), as opposed to the town where they teach. To correct this problem, we added the “tutor location” feature to our registration process. It only takes a few seconds to complete and creates so much flexibility for the teacher. The teacher first selects a “teaching school.” This is the school of employment. It is very important because it allows My Town Tutors to verify that the individual is in fact a teacher. After selecting the "teaching school," the teacher has the option of selecting a “tutoring location."  The “tutor location” choice allows the teacher to select an additional location other than the work school. For example in Quincy we have 11 schools currently listed. If a Boston teacher lives in Quincy and wants to tutor in Quincy, the “tutor location” choice would be a school in Quincy. So if a parent searches for a tutor in Quincy, the Boston teacher will be one of the possible candidates for the parent. (This teacher still has the option of being listed as a tutor in Boston too!) Teacher feedback was the inspiration for creating of the “tutor location” option. The added flexibility of selecting two tutoring locations is helping us improve our ability to connect parents with teachers who tutor. We appreciate feedback and will do our best to provide a great service for both parents and teachers. We are always looking for great teachers who tutor. Any teacher who is interested in tutoring can join our exclusive network of teachers who tutor. The cost of membership for ONE full year is only $12. There are no other fees for our service. Teachers keep 100% of the tutoring fees. Thanks for taking the time to read this post and remember.....“Teachers are great tutors!”
