Inch And Miles: A Great Children's Book
Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success is an amazing teaching tool to help youngsters reach a healthy definition of success. The story does a great job of teaching John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. The main characters, Inch and Miles, are given a magical whistle to borrow to help them on their journey to understand the meaning of success.
The colorful characters that Inch and Miles encounter are unique. Each represents one block in the Pyramid of Success. (The pyramid from the book is displayed on a teacher’s webpage in San Marcos, California.)
Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success is a great resource for parents, teachers, coaches, and any person who works closely with children.
In one of my high school classes, each day we read a section. After the selection is read, students respond to a writing prompt that forces them to reflect and very often is the starting point for a classroom discussion.
Below are the blogs for each theme:
Inch and Miles: The Magic Whistle
Axelrod the Ant: Hard Work
Rhonda the Robin: Enthusiasm
Charlie the Chimp: Friendship
Betty the Bee: Cooperation
Tess the Trout: Self-Control
Rascal the Rabbit: Alertness
Skittles the Squirell: Action
Fred the Frog: Determination
Hugh the Horse: Fitness
Silky the Spider: Skill
Louie the Lion: Team Spirit
Everett the Eagle: Poise
Albert the Alligator: Confidence

National Geographic has a great activity to reinforce a unit on Lewis and Clark called “Go West Across America with Lewis & Clark.” It is a quick 15 minute interactive journey. Students will read and make decisions that Lewis and Clark faced.
For many of the slides, there are icons that provide additional information. The icons are “Do you know?” and “Journal.” The are no questions on the following worksheet related to the icons, however I will probably add some in the future.
The following information can be shared in a google.doc.

Coaching Youth Basketball: BEEF = Good Shooting Form

Top Joke PagesBasketball Jokes: Why did the basketball player go to jail?… Because he shot the ball! (Top Basketball Jokes for Kids)
For a coach to be successful at teaching players how to shoot the basketball correctly, there needs to be a complete understanding of the fundamentals of a shot (BEEF). A coach does not have to be a great shooter or even a fair shooter to be a great teacher of shooting. The coach simply must understand BEEF and be able to explain the fundamentals to the players. The coach also needs to have knowledge of a teaching progression and age-appropriate drills that will help players develop the proper shooting fundamentals. To be a good shooter, it is important to know the four basic parts of the shot. The word BEEF is a simple easy way to remember the most important fundamentals of a good shot. All players should be able to remember and recite the fundamentals, even if the fundamentals have not been mastered yet. Each letter in the word represents an important fundamental. To be a good shooter, a player must master ALL the fundamentals of BEEF. Below is an explanation of each letter in the word BEEF as it applies to shooting. B = BALANCE – start by teaching the footwork for the shot. BODY BALANCE- Have the players stand with their “shooting / lead foot” forward.
- “TOE TO THE TARGET” – the lead foot or shooting foot should point to the target or the basket.
- Instruct the players to place their non-shooting foot into the arch of the sneaker (the insert) of the shooting foot.
- Tell the players to move their non-shooting foot (back foot) to the side so that the feet are shoulder width apart.
- Bend the knees to be in triple threat position.
- Have the shoulders in front of the feet.
- Feet, hips, and shoulders should be square.
- The shooting hand should be placed in the middle of the basketball. The palm should not touch the ball. There should be “little daylight” that can be seen as the player holds the ball off his palm and on his fingertip pads and fingertips.
- READ THE BALL – The player should place the ball in his hand with the palm facing the sky. The hand should be between waist and shoulder level. The player should then READ THE BALL (i.e. Spaulding).
- LINE UP THE SEAMS - It is a very fundamental step that may not always be able to be completed during a game but the player should always try to line up his fingertips with the seams to get a good feel for the ball. This will also help a developing shooter to identify whether his shot has the proper rotation.
- ELBOW FORMS AN “L” (in line with the lead foot and knee) – It is also important to make sure the elbow is straight. There are four ways to miss a shot. Right, left, short, or long. If a player can shoot the ball straight, he will be a much more accurate shooter. With proper elbow position, the player will only miss the shot short or long. He should never miss to the right or left.
- WRIST WRINKLES – The ball should rest on the shooting hand far enough back so that the shooting hand’s wrist has wrinkles.
- The eyes should be focused on the target at all times. The eyes should never follow the flight of the ball.
- The eyes should focus on the target, the center of the basket.
- BEND – Even when a player shoots very close to the basket, it is important to bend the knees. The further away from the basket the player moves, the more important it is to bend the knees and use the legs.
- AND EXTEND (extend the elbow above the eyebrow) – After releasing the ball, the elbow should end above the player’s eyebrow. A good reminder for players is the phrase - “ELBOW ABOVE THE EYEBROW.” Coaches can use this phrase to help remind the players of the proper fundamental.
- PUT YOUR HAND IN THE BASKET (or HAND IN THE HOOP) – Players should try to finish their follow through by snapping (maybe not the best term) the hand in the basket. Sometimes it might be helpful to tell the player to try touch their fingertips to their wrist, even though this is impossible.
- FREEZE THE FOLLOW THROUGH – It is also important to hold the follow through until the ball goes through the hoop. A player should not only freeze his shooting hand, but his guide hand as well. If a player drops his guide hand and only freezes his shooting hand, the body has a tendency to turn to the side of the guide hand. This will negatively impact the release of the shot.
- FISH HOOK – after completing the follow through, the shooting hand should resemble a “fish hook.”

5 Things You Need to Know to Become a Computer Technician
In all likelihood, you’re reading this because you’re inclined to computers, like taking them apart or figuring out how softwares work and how to fix bugs, or you think you may have a knack for technology and want to explore some basic job options that can help you start out. Being a computer technician can be an incredibly fulfilling and fun job, provided you love and know what you do. If this is your first foray into the computer tech’s world and you’re looking for some insights, pointers and general help, read on.
1. Understand the difference: You are not a programmer or web designer, someone who works intricately with designing and creating new software, websites or websites (respectively). Network administrators are those people who take care of networks in an organization, and help with the operations of a network’s different servers. Being a computer technician requires you to help repair broken computers and other related computer devices as well as upgrade and configure them.
2. You’ll need to be in decent physical shape: You may require to move heavy computers around, especially if you’re working in an older office that hasn’t upgraded its instruments. Crawling under desks, squeezing inside narrow cubicles, and being able to take apart small pieces of hardware without nervously fumbling will be part of your schedule.
3. You don’t need to go to a four-year college to become a computer technician. This is the best part about this job. If you find a mentor or teacher kind enough, you can learn a lot about this profession while working. Employers do like it if you’re certified though. CompTIA A+ certification is the very basic kinds available; you can choose to get advanced certifications as you progress and grow in experience and knowledge.
4. Supplemental skills: You may want to start learning about other operating systems that geeks prefer, like Linux, Ubuntu, even MacOS. Being versatile with knowledge is important, so leave your loyalties behind. You’ll want to learn basic skills like soldering, wiring, drilling, cutting and filing.
5. Salaries: A computer technician’s salary varies widely from state to state, business to business and experience to experience. If you’re working in a mid-sized company where you report to a boss, you can make upwards of $30K a year. However, if you’re doing this part time in the evenings or on weekends, you will most likely bill by the computer problem or the hour. If you’re passionate about it, enough experience on the job can translate into a full-time position at a formal repairing/networking company.
Good computer technicians understand that it’s important to keep abreast of what the latest trends are, constantly reading up online and experimenting with new ideas and products. Remember that it’s a versatile job that will always be in demand, so you’ll never have to worry about job security if you’re a fast learner and have good foundations in computer technology.

Click here for more ideas on coaching youth basketball.
Coaching youth basketball can be a very rewarding experience. I recently coached my first youth basketball practice. It was a little overwhelming.
I was given one hour to:- Introduce the coaches
- Handout shirts
- Run 30 minutes of skills
- Play a 30 minute game
To have the players get the most out of each weekly session, the coaches felt it might be a good idea to introduce a “theme of the week.” Each week we will introduce a new theme. Themes can focus on a sport-specific skill, fundamental, or other area such as developing a positive team culture.
Since most of the players are participating on a team for the first time, our first theme of the week was “being a good teammate.” Being a good teammate is something that we will discuss each week as the season progresses. Having good team chemistry is essential to having a positive experience for the players and coaches, that is why we choose to emphasize this concept as soon as we could.
What exactly does it mean to be a good teammate?
Since we were going to be working together for the next few months, the coaches felt it was important to stress that each player learn the names of all the players and coaches.
Before teaching skills, we wanted to develop a positive team culture. We placed labels with the players names on the back of each shirt to help us learn the names more quickly.
As we called the team together for the first time, each player introduced himself with the following information.
Name:
Grade:
School:
During our time together, the coaches always try to address each player using first names. Over the next few weeks we will call on different players to test their ability to name all the members of the team.
We hope to have a great season and will share other themes as the season progresses.
