My Town Tutors 50 States in 50 Days Teacher Challenge
My Town Tutors makes is easy for parents to connect with local teachers who tutor. Our goal is to be the #1 tutoring resource for parents and teachers in America. Our motto is “Teachers are great tutors!”
Parents love the fact that every teacher in our directory is a teacher!
We currently list over 280 teachers who tutor, mostly from Massachusetts, the state where we started. During the our 50 States in 50 Days Challenge, our goal is to register teachers who tutor from all 50 states. We have set up twitter accounts for each state to communicate with teachers and parents.
Our goal is to attract and register teachers who tutor in ALL 50 states. Each state will have ONE FREE DAY where My Town Tutors will be offering FREE MEMBERSHIP for any teacher (working or retired) who tutors. The only requirement is that you MUST BE A TEACHER!
(The FREE DAYS and promo codes will be announced in August. Stay tuned!)
There are no other fees! A teacher sets the hourly rate and keeps 100% of the fees. It is that simple. One of our tutors made $5,000 this past school tutoring, not a bad return on a $12 investment!
If you are a teacher and are interested in registering, why wait? We have two other amazing special rates. The length of membership for all our promotions is until September 30th, 2014.
$12 – No promo code is needed for our special promotion rate which will expire on September 30th, 2013. After this date, our rates will change.
$5 – Promo Code teacher – We are practically giving our membership away. That is fine with us, we need to attract teachers who tutor. If we are going to be a top tutoring resource in America, we need to build up our directory before the start of the 2012-2013 school year.
TEACHERS – The registration process is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete. Just enter your school zip code and follow the prompts from there.
PARENTS – Enter your home zip code to find the teachers who are registered in your area. View the profiles and select the one that best fits your needs and the needs of your child.
The teacher and parent will communicate directly to set up a time that is mutually convenient. Parents can choose 3 payments that are all easy to use.
Please share this blog with others. We need your help to spread the word that “teachers are great tutors!”
Have a great summer!

Tips for Math Tutors
FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Math is a special brand of torture for some students. They just don’t get the concepts behind it. It is sort of like handing someone who only knows English a book written in Japanese. Not only are the letters unfamiliar, but the whole book is backwards!
The issue that older students especially have is that they missed out on the basics. They faked their understanding at some critical point in the past. Now, they are lost and just following directions without actually understanding how it works. The good thing is, this can be easily resolved.
What you have to do, as a tutor, is find out what they are missing. That may mean starting at the very simplest points. Maybe they missed the idea behind division or fractions. Maybe they don’t understand how decimal places work.
Maybe they just do not get the concept behind the letters and numbers being jumbled, or order of operation. Any of these crucial but simple foul ups can greatly affect their ability to learn the new concepts they need to.
Math builds on itself. It doesn’t matter if it is Algebra, Geometry, Calculus or Trigonometry. Everything starts with the basics and works its way up from there. Make sure your students have a firm foundation, and then work on their understanding. Anyone can follow directions, but only thorough understanding what they are doing will the students be real mathematicians.

@SimplySuzy’s Top 5: I have decided to include Twitter accounts of those who I know in realms outside of Twitter, as well. I am a firm believer in hybrid interactions, as online connections are strengthened when you begin to connect with others in many arenas – FB, Pinterest, conferences, workshops, classroom visits, etc… Tell them I said hello!!

You’d think I’d run into Greg at the local grocery store, as he lives so close to me, but alas, no. Greg is an active Tweeter, who shares valuable resources, reflects on his own learning, and interacts with everyone. Greg works closely with the folks at EdTechTeacher, where he’s an engaging presenter who shares strategies that work with real, live students. Attendees leave his sessions feeling inspired and more confident in their technology skills. Somebody tell him he needs more props in his presentations, though (HEE!).

I was already a huge fan of Jerry Blumengarten because of the amazing, endless, valuable list of resources he shares with parents, students and teachers alike. I became crazed fan when he visited my classroom several months ago and spent a few hours with my students. Jerry is a very real, very genuine educator who loves learning and teaching, and clearly his enthusiasm fuels the creation of his incomparable website. I share his resources in all of my courses, and teachers fall in love with him, one after another. Thanks for coming to Mullen-Hall, Jerry – the kids mentioned you all the way to summer vacation!
