So Many Distractions
by Ann-Rhea S. Fitch, Bookpx
I struggled with reading as a child. The fact that I was a bit dyslexic and was also learning to read in two languages at once (one left-to-right and the other right-to-left) certainly didn’t help. And I was (and still am) ADHD. When I was a kid, we didn’t have such terms—I was just considered “lazy.” Every distraction took my attention in many directions at once.
Years—okay, decades!—later, I love to read and am grateful for all the knowledge I’ve gained through the printed and electronic page. I’m never without reading material. I may not read as fast as others, but I read and read and read. On my iPhone, iPad, computer, books, magazines, whatever. I am writing this on my iPad while flying to a meeting, and I am amazed at the number of people staring into space: not reading; not listening to music; not working; not sleeping. Just staring. Why? I wonder. Be productive, I want to shout! Learn something! Do something! But, I just sit and write, again grateful for the teachers who hung in there with me in those early years. Their perseverance got me through grade school and high school. The tools they taught me got me through college, and I soared through graduate school. Thank you all for the greatest gifts: the ability to read and write.
I’ve mostly learned to manage my ADHD, though my husband may often disagree! Today’s technology is a double-edged sword. My iPad has books, productivity apps, games, puzzles, email, news and, and, and… I can surf the web—even on this flight, there’s Wifi. I can look at anything I want. I can jump from one thing to another, never staying on anything that doesn’t capture and keep my attention. So I wonder IF this would have been a good thing for me when I was a kid.
I think what would this do to a classroom. Would teachers have to limit children’s access in order to control their learning? Could free thought prevail? Would chaos reign?
And then I think about the books we have created at Bookpx. Would these have held my attention as a child? Yup. Because they are short, focused, with nice pictures (if I must say so myself) and entertaining rhymes (thanks, Lori). I could read one of the books in our Nature Series for Kids and feel a sense of accomplishment. And, with the Multimedia Enhanced eBooks for Kids series, aimed at preschoolers, I could listen to each page and watch the videos. Yup, I would have loved these books. And, teachers would love them, too, since they could use these books to teach kids about some of natures most remarkable creatures.
All that said, I hope you’ll check out our books for your kids and classrooms. We know there is a lot of material out there and more distractions than ever before; I hope ours are positive ones!
Ann-Rhea Fitch is a wildlife photographer and partner in Bookpx, publisher of environmentally conscious eBooks for kids. The Nature Series for Kids is available for all eReaders capable of displaying color eBooks, including computers. The Multimedia Enhanced eBooks for Kids are exclusively available from the Apple iBookstore. The web site is http://www.bookpx.com -
Grandparents Day: A Little Something is a Wonderful Book!
For Grandparents Day, A Little Something is a great book about the relationship of a grandmother and a granddaughter. It is a beautifully illustrated story that chronicles the growth of a special relationship over the years. Any woman who has had a lovinig relationship with a grandmother or granddaughter will truly enjoy this book. It is worth adding this book to your collection.
A Little Something has earned 6 National Awards – The Joan Fassler Award, Parents’ Choice Recommended, Children’s Book Center Our Choice, Parent Council Outstanding Selection, American Bookseller Pick of the Lists, and a Benjamin Franklin Gold Award.
The book is part of the Legacy Project which is an amazing resource for teachers and families!
The following information was taken directly from the Legacy Project page
“I want to give you a little something…”
Each time a young girl visits her grandmother, the visit ends with the grandmother’s familiar words. Then she gives her granddaughter a small keepsake. As the years pass, the grown granddaughter comes to understand the significance of all the things she has received from her grandmother, including the last gift of a special cedar chest. It becomes clear that the most precious gift of all is the gift of love.
A Little Something is about love and legacies across generations. One reviewer describes the book as having “the emotion of Love You Forever and the nostalgic charm of a Norman Rockwell painting” (read more reviews). The story’s message is timeless, because loving connections across generations never go out of style.
The heartwarming story is beautifully complemented by the evocative, richly-detailed, golden watercolor illustrations of award-winning artist Laurie McGaw.”
Have a great Grandparents Day!

Homeroom Tips: High School Homeroom Day #1
High School homeroom periods at the start of the school year can be a very paper intensive endeavor. It is a necessary evil that must be handled as efficiently and timely as possible.
Like preparing for proctoring for a state examination, the room should be completely organized before the students enter. Clear off an area where all the documents can placed in an orderly fashion so the students can pick the forms up. Having the students pick up the forms will save time for you.
In the case of my high school, we hand out ELEVEN forms on the first day of homeroom: Student Parking Registration Form, Hazing Law Form, Student Information Sheet, Lunch Schedule, the District Calendar for the School Year, the Public Permission Form to Use Photos in the Newspaper and Website, Free / Reduced Lunch Form, Emergency Information Cards (for the Nurse), 1st 3 Days Bell Schedule, Student Handbook, and Student Schedules.
Once the students enter the classroom and become settled, have them come up to the front (or back) of the room to collect the forms.
Our student handbooks are also passbooks and homework agendas. The students write the name on the inside cover. I ask the students to open up to the current date and write their homework for homeroom. I stress we want to be the top homeroom (not stats are recorded) with the highest percentage or returns. Quick returns make the job of the homeroom teacher easier.
The goal is to get the documents to the administration or front office as soon as possible. Once classroom teachers relieve themselves of the homeroom form burdens, they can commitment themselves to their classes.
Before the bell, I reiterate to the students that it is critical to get all the forms in tomorrow. If you have organized and cooperative students this will make the collection day a breeze. -
Grandparents Day Lesson: Grandparent Chart
GRANDPARENTS DAY – SEPTEMBER 9TH, 2012
Have the students complete the following chart. Since the focus is grandparents, it is not necessary to include other siblings. It is a great starting point for additional Grandparents Day Activities. Students may have to seek guidance from other family members to learn the names of great grandparents. (The worksheet I use has lines above each word to list the names.)

The Best Person for the Job is… Someone Else?
Tell me if this sounds familiar. Your child is participating in a sport, say soccer. You want to be a supportive parent and you opt to help coach, only to find that your own child often blows off your input while listening intently to everyone except you. Ring a bell?
Often times I have found that whether a given sport or school subject, my own children often respond far better to input from another adult. That’s not to say they don’t listen to me, but rather often times just react in a more positive way when another adult provides a bit of insight to what they’re doing.
In the case of tutoring for school this has been even more the case. In the past, as a child struggles with one subject or another, you may find that seeking out another individual to provide some tutoring may give them that bit of help they need. This isn’t to say that it’s in a subject you may not be familiar with, but rather just having that “other” person sometimes can make a world of difference.
Often times teachers at the school your child already attends will provide extra help, and of course services like My Town Tutors also can provide direct access to highly qualified teachers ready to help in all 50 states. By combining tutoring such as this, with easy to access resources such as 19Pencils.com, you may find that this help goes even further for your student.
As an experiment, have you child go for extra help either before or after school with their own teacher. But as with tutoring yourself, this may be too close to the situation.
By selecting a tutor whom both you and your student respect, you may find the results can be far reaching for both of you. Your child may find the help he or she needs and you may find a new approach to coaching your child.
In the case of participating in sports with my own children, I’ve found that by watching closely how my child responds to that of the input from the other coach, and by reproducing those same actions, I’ve found they begin responding to me better.
As the saying goes, “sometimes it’s not what you say but how you say it.” Sometimes the solution to helping your children may be as simple as finding that other way to say it.

Easy Tech for Parents and Teachers
By Brittney Martin
Brittney is a Public Relations consultant for Two Bros web-design, the creators of the Easy Teach educational application. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/16/education/16homework.html
Last year, the New York Times published an article about a campaign to limit homework for K-12 students.
Across the nation, parents, teachers and administrators have come together to speak out against the occasionally overwhelming amounts of homework grade-school children are assigned from night to night.
It is argued that children aren’t able to spend enough time with their families, enough time to just enjoy being kids, because they are given so much homework to complete.
Many plans to limit homework have been suggested. One proposes that teacher’s only be allowed to assign 10 minutes of homework per night for each year of schooling i.e. 10 minutes for first graders, 40 minutes for fourth graders, etc. Others have already banned teacher’s from assigning homework on weekends and holidays.
But some teachers feel that a limit on homework could severely slow down the learning process. They claim there’s not enough time in class to adequately cover the material required.
What you’re left with is a two valid sides of an argument that no one can seem to solve completely.
At Easy Teach we’ve set out to bridge the chasm between these equally strong and important points of view.
What we’ve created as an educational gaming app that allows teachers to individually customize the games’ content (spelling lists, math facts, etc.), and have the kids start playing (and learning) immediately!
Kids have fun and compete to get the highest scores in their class while the concepts they learn in class from week to week are being constantly reinforced.
Teachers can track each individuals student’s progress and see which concepts may need more in-class focus.
Easy Teach is still in the works, but visit http://easytea.ch to submit your email address and be the first to know when it’s up and running.
You don’t want to miss out on this revolutionary educational program. -
