Tutoring in College
By Alexander Diedrick
Tutoring can get a bad rap when you’re in college. When you tend to think of tutoring, you usually think of high school students getting help in geometry or European history. It doesn’t seem like college students would need tutors because they are more “adults.”
But the truth is that everyone could benefit from tutoring. It’s a relatively simple concept that could vastly improve your grades in just about any subject. You might think that tutors would only be necessary in gen ed subjects like science, but if you can find a tutor, you should consider seeking help in the courses that you are most passionate about.
For example, I attend Columbia College Chicago and have fiction writing as a minor. During my first semester at school, I registered for a fiction writing tutor to help me in the classroom. Never having a tutor before, much less a fiction writing tutor, I didn’t really know what to expect. Would the tutor simply read my stories and tell me which ones sucked the most? Would I be intimidated by the tutor to the point where my work suffered? Do I even know what my “work” is since I’m just getting started as a fiction writer?
On my first day, I was pulled into a closet-like space with my tutor. Over the next two hours, she followed the same format as my fiction writing classes, which included reading other authors’ stories, free writing, word games, and critiquing my own writing. It all seemed very natural, and that’s the sign of a good tutor – they put you at ease with your work.
Afterwards, I was baffled to find out that my tutor was only a year older than me. She had a few more fiction writing classes under her belt than me, sure, but she still knew what she was doing almost as much as one of my professors.
Now, over two years later, I know that I am a better writer because of my experience with tutoring. Classrooms are great, but there is something so much more personal with the one-on-one relationship between tutor and tutee. It’s important for someone who knows more than you to be as familiar with your work as a tutor would because sometimes, especially when you are just getting started as a college student, you need to be told where you need to improve the most…and when your work really does suck (told in a more polite way).
Go and find a tutor, even if it’s just a student in a more advanced class that looks over your work. Even if you don’t think so now, you’ll benefit in the long run.

We currently list over 280 teachers who tutor, mostly from Massachusetts, the state where we started. During the our 50 States in 50 Days Challenge, our goal is to register teachers who tutor from all 50 states. We have set up twitter accounts for each state to communicate with teachers and parents.
Our goal is to attract and register teachers who tutor in ALL 50 states. Each state will have ONE FREE DAY where My Town Tutors will be offering FREE MEMBERSHIP for any teacher (working or retired) who tutors. The only requirement is that you MUST BE A TEACHER!
(The FREE DAYS and promo codes will be announced in August. Stay tuned!)
There are no other fees! A teacher sets the hourly rate and keeps 100% of the fees. It is that simple. One of our tutors made $5,000 this past school tutoring, not a bad return on a $12 investment!
If you are a teacher and are interested in registering, why wait? We have two other amazing special rates. The length of membership for all our promotions is until September 30th, 2014.
$12 – No promo code is needed for our special promotion rate which will expire on September 30th, 2013. After this date, our rates will change.
$5 – Promo Code teacher – We are practically giving our membership away. That is fine with us, we need to attract teachers who tutor. If we are going to be a top tutoring resource in America, we need to build up our directory before the start of the 2012-2013 school year.
TEACHERS – The registration process is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete. Just enter your school zip code and follow the prompts from there.
PARENTS – Enter your home zip code to find the teachers who are registered in your area. View the profiles and select the one that best fits your needs and the needs of your child.
The teacher and parent will communicate directly to set up a time that is mutually convenient. Parents can choose 3 payments that are all easy to use.
Please share this blog with others. We need your help to spread the word that “teachers are great tutors!”
Have a great summer!
My Town Tutors is a website that connects parents with teachers who tutor. We currently list over 260 teachers from Massachusetts. We are always looking for qualified teachers from all 50 states who tutor to join our national directory of teachers who tutor. -
Tips for Math Tutors
FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Math is a special brand of torture for some students. They just don’t get the concepts behind it. It is sort of like handing someone who only knows English a book written in Japanese. Not only are the letters unfamiliar, but the whole book is backwards!
The issue that older students especially have is that they missed out on the basics. They faked their understanding at some critical point in the past. Now, they are lost and just following directions without actually understanding how it works. The good thing is, this can be easily resolved.
What you have to do, as a tutor, is find out what they are missing. That may mean starting at the very simplest points. Maybe they missed the idea behind division or fractions. Maybe they don’t understand how decimal places work.
Maybe they just do not get the concept behind the letters and numbers being jumbled, or order of operation. Any of these crucial but simple foul ups can greatly affect their ability to learn the new concepts they need to.
Math builds on itself. It doesn’t matter if it is Algebra, Geometry, Calculus or Trigonometry. Everything starts with the basics and works its way up from there. Make sure your students have a firm foundation, and then work on their understanding. Anyone can follow directions, but only thorough understanding what they are doing will the students be real mathematicians.
