What would happen if you unfollowed every twitter account following you? We are going to complete this experiment with some our our clients to help improve their business connections, starting with @mytowntutorsMA. Why are we encouraging these accounts to do this?
1. We are curious. @mytowntutors and @mytowntutorsMA are our extremely active & experienced twitter accounts, however Mathtoons & @mypracti are the worst twitter accounts in the world. (Not really it is a marketing blog to attraction attention to these great accounts for teachers)
2. These accounts are relatively inexperienced with twitter. Twitter is a great resource for so many reasons, however it does take some time to learn to use if efficiently and effectively.
3. We want to KISS “Keep it Simple Stupid.” These accounts have clear goals. Our goal is to keep it simple and get back to basics. (We are going to try to follower our own advice too!) We have been using twitter for the last 2 years and want to use our knowledge to be the #1 tutoring resource in America!
4. We want to reflect and create our #1st52. We want to spend the next few weeks reflecting on who would be the 1st 52 accounts we would follow. We will come up with list over the next several weeks.
5. We do not want to spend much time on twitter. Yes, there is life outside of twitter and we would like to try it.
What is your hypothesis?
1. An account will find out who the true friends and followers are. A minority of twitter followers will unfollow an account because it stops following, but people who understand our mission to help parents and teachers connect will still see value in our account and remain loyal followers.
2. Weeding out is good. There are many followers who are following because we follow them, they have no interest in education, parenting, and some great jokes for math, kids, teachers, and families!
3. Attract true followers. If someone follows an account, seeing that it is following anyone, they should have a good idea that we probably will not be following back. So they will be following us for who we are.
4. We will survive. If an account is left with no followers, it will survive. It is not the end of the world. Keep learning about twitter and start over better than before! We have some ideas about how twitter works and will follow them closely.

Next steps
1. Write Mission Tweets: (My Town Tutors Blog) This should be a very simple process. What is the mission of your company? What service do you provide? What problems do you solve?
2. Define Your #1 Goal! Keep it Simple, Stupid!: What do you hope to accomplish, make money, share information, support a charity… whatever your #1 goal is, remember what it is, NEVER FORGET IT, and create your social media strategy around it.
3. Define Your Audience: Who are your followers and what do they want to hear? Share tweets that are interest to your targeted audience and you will soon collect followers quickly. Other will retweet your information and people will look to you as a thought leaderin your area of expertise!
4. Use Google Docs to share ideas, tweets, guest blogs, blogs, and sponsors. Googe Drive has been essential and critical to our Social Media Strategy. We could not live without it!
5. Unfollow Everyone: When we started our mystery company had a horrible twitter ratio a 30:1 following to followers. It is a great strategy to start over and re-create your twitter account and philosophy!
6. Content is King! It is critical to share information that is useful to your followers. Work hard to provide current resources your followers can use!
7. Social Media Makeover: Be Selective About Who to Follow: It is critical to make connections, on twitter, but it is also critical to make the right connections.
8. Follow the Best! A very simple idea, connect with the top accounts and experts in your field and area. These are the top accounts in the Boston, Massachusetts area.
9. Learn from Mistakes! Start-ups will make mistakes, and many of them, so learn and learn quickly!
10. EXTREME TWITTER TIP: Don’t Follow Anyone! Here are a few accounts that do not follow anyone, but have a tremendous following. We do not recommend this for most accounts.
11. “Say Hello to My Little Friend! Simple Tips on how to greet new followers!
12. Keep it (tweets) Simple Stupid! Keep you tweets simple and interesting to your target audience. It is not rocket science!
13. Be a Publisher with Paper.li! Create an on-line newspaper that will share automated tweets and great content which is created by your followers. Once you spend the 30 -45 minutes to register, you do not have to do any work. It is awesome!

1. What is your purpose? The first thing you need to identify is what is your purpose or goal with twitter. Some people use twitter for personal or social reasons. Some use it for professional development and to share ideas with others in their field. In our case, the purpose is to reach out to parents, educators, and schools to promote our service. My Town Tutors connects parents with local teachers who tutors.
We also want to share our blog and guest blogs with our followers. We have had some great posts over the last few months and are looking to attract readers and writers. We hope to provide insights that will make the job of being a parent and / or teacher a little easier.
2. Who is your audience? Our target audiences are teachers, schools, and parents. Our focus is on creating content that will be helpful to these groups.
3. What will you tweet? My Town Tutors wants to provide content that is useful to to teachers and parents. We often provide quotes relating to parents and teaching. In addition we have have a school joke of the day that we tweet each day at 6:00 AM. Both parents and educators can benefit from these clean jokes or riddles. Many are a little corny, however they often can bring a smile or chuckle. Why not start the day of with a good laugh?
4. What is your follow policy? Who will you follow? Will you follow back anyone who follows you? Do their interests really matter? Our policy is to follow educators, educational groups, such as teachers unions, parents, parent interest groups and educational interest groups. Our goal is to connect with parents and teachers. Please do not be offended if we do not follow everyone back.
5. What is your time commitment? How much time will you devote to twitter. Some people and companies can spend every waking hour on twitter. We try to interact as often as possible, however we do not want to be entirely consumed. Hopefully, we provide teachers and parents with some useful information.
