  • A Letter to U.S. Teachers

    Dear US Teachers,
My Town Tutors is a website that connects parents with local teachers who tutor. We tested the website in a small area in Massachusetts and have had a great deal of success.
Our goal now is to share this tutoring opportunity with teachers all across America.
My Town Tutors has 3 simple, core beliefs:

    • TEACHERS ARE GREAT TUTORS!

    • PARENTS WANT A GREAT TUTOR FOR THEIR CHILD!

    • TEACHERS SHOULD EARN GREAT MONEY TUTORING!

There are no gimmicks to what we are trying to do. Our goal is to recruit teachers who tutor and connect them with parents looking for tutors.  My Town Tutors currently has 240 teachers registered in Massachusetts. With the help of teachers, we hope to list teachers who tutor in all 50 states by the end of the summer.
With our special promotion, any teacher who tutors can be listed in our directory until September 2014 for only $12. There are no other costs! Teachers keep 100% of the hourly fees!

We are using this blog to share this opportunity with as many American teachers as possible. If you agree “Teachers are great tutors” please share this post via twitter, and facebook.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Have a great summer!

  • Georgia Teachers are Great Tutors!

My Town Tutors knows Georgia teachers are great tutors! Our goal is to be the #1 resource in Georgia for parents looking for tutors.
Our core belief is “teachers are great tutors!” We also know tutoring is a great way for teachers to earn $30 – $85 an hour.
Georgia teachers can use their education, experience, knowledge, and training to do what they do best – help students achieve academically. At the same time, these teachers have the flexibility of selecting their own hours and own rate of pay.
Parents benefit because they can find qualified, professional teachers, with unique skills to work with a child. Parents can have complete confidence that the every tutor we list has experience and training working with students who have a variety of learning abilities and styles.
My Town Tutors firmly believes teachers who tutor are a much better alternative for parents than the national tutoring franchises. Many of these companies rarely employ teachers, and if they do, the teachers are grossly underpaid. The national franchise tutors are usually college students who have little, if any, training or experience working with students. Additionally, the cost of these services for parents is insanely high.
Georgia teachers know the curriculum, content, and state standards. More importantly, teachers know children. They understand the learning process and the challenges faced by many students. They speak regularly with other educators and have been trained to use strategies to reach many different learning styles.
The goals of My Town Tutors are really simple.

    1. To make it easy for students and parents to connect with a qualified, local teacher who tutors.
    2. To help teachers who tutor earn additional income with a flexible schedule that fits their schedule.

Last fall, My Town Tutors was tested successfully in the towns south of Boston. Parents and teachers loved it! We now list over 250 teachers who tutor in that area. We are now actively starting our campaign to recruit Georgia teachers who tutor.
My Town Tutors would love to list any Georgia teacher who tutors in our national directory. With our special promotion, teachers can register until September 31, 2014 for only $12. There are no other fees for our service. If a teacher charges $50 an hour, the teacher keeps all $50. It is that simple.
We just started @mytowntutorsga to connect with Georgia teachers and parents. Please follow us for the most recent updates and information about our blog posts.

  • The South Shore's #1 Resource for Tutoring

    Please Share!

My Town Tutors was created in Hanover, Massachusetts in 2009 by a high school teacher with one simple goal – to be a great South Shore tutoring resource for parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. Our motto is “Teachers are great tutors!”
My Town Tutors lists over 250 teachers who tutor, mostly from the South Shore. We make it easy for South Shore parents to connect with a local teacher who tutors.
My Town Tutors has two simple beliefs.
    1. Teachers are great tutors!
    2. Parents want great tutors for their children!
My Town Tutors is a huge hit on the South Shore because we provide a great service to many groups.
Parents and students can find qualified professional teachers, with unique skills to work with their child. Parents can have complete confidence that the each of the tutors we list in this area has experience teaching students with variety of learning abilities and styles.
Teachers who tutor are a great alternative to the national tutoring franchises. Many of these companies rarely employ teachers, and if they do, the teachers are grossly underpaid. The national franchise tutors are usually college students who have no training or experience working with students. Additionally, these companies charge insanely high fees.
Teachers know the curriculum, content, and state standards. More importantly, teachers know children. They understand the learning process and the challenges faced by many students. They speak regularly with other teachers and have been trained to use strategies to reach many different learning styles.
“I have seen incredible progress with my child. He went from a failing grade at mid-term to a B+. I have seen improvement in his grades, but more importantly in his self-esteem.” South Shore 10th grade parent.
Teachers can use their education, experience, knowledge, and training to do what they do best, help students achieve academically. At the same time, these teachers can have the flexibility to select their own hours and own rate of pay.
We list teachers from almost every school district on the South Shore. We currently have several teachers who are tutoring students regularly. We even have two high school math teachers who are turning away students because they are so busy.
“Tutoring is a great way to earn extra money. I enjoy the flexibility of selecting hours that fit my schedule. It is also a great way to connect with a student. It so rewarding to hear with pride a student report an improved grade to me!” South Shore Teacher / Math Tutor
Guidance counselors can take one more thing off their busy plates. Guidance counselors no longer have to ask around to find a tutor for a student. Guidance counselors in the South Shore know that qualified teachers are very capable tutors. Now when a parent inquires about a tutor, the guidance department can refer the person to My Town Tutors.
“My Town Tutors has been a great resource for us. In the past we have had difficulty locating tutors for some subjects. Now we have a database of tutors from the entire South Shore. If we do not have a physics tutor in Hanover, we can connect with a Marshfield High or Holbrook High teacher. It has been a great time saver for us!” Hanover High Guidance Counselor
The goal of My Town Tutors is really simple – to make it easy for students and parents to connect with a qualified, local teacher.

  • 4 Things to Consider When Hiring a Tutor

    Guest post by Katheryn Rivas
So you’ve decided that some additional outside help will help your child excel in his is her studies. While a tutor can most definitely help your child in this department, it’s important that you realize that not all tutors are the same—just like with clothes, you’re child’s tutor needs to be a perfect “fit.” That said, to learn which tutor is best for your child, below are some areas that you such touch on when interviewing the tutor-for-hire.
    1. Expertise
This one is pretty much a doozie—the tutor has to specialize in the subject being taught. But being certified in a particular area isn’t all that matters—even a professor can be a lousy instructor and tutor. You need to see if the tutor has multi-ways of teaching to relate and adapt to your child’s specific way(s) of learning. Ask the tutor about his or her techniques. For example, what are his or her go-to methods? A great tutor should also be able to explain concepts not only in a direct, matter-of-fact way but also know how to “break it down” and speak in layman’s terms. Can the tutor you’re considering do that?
    2. Success Rate
You also want to know how long your tutor has been in the business and how many students in your child’s specific age group has he or she taught? Also, how many of his or her students actually improved their grades? While the time frame for improvement will vary for each student, there is no harm in asking what was the average time it took for the tutor’s previous student(s) to make higher grades—after all tutoring can get pricey and it’s important you know what you’re getting yourself into if it’ll take several months so you can prepare and get your finances together.
    3. Accessibility
It’s equally important that your tutor makes him or herself easily reachable to your child—this is not to suggest that the tutor you are considering can’t have a life of his or her own, but if your child has a quick question, can he or she be reached via email? Cell phone? Or even social media? Or does the tutor have strict, rigid hours?
    4. Good Connection
Last but certainly not least, it’s important that your child and the tutor have some sort of interaction before committing to a specific tutor. Children do better when they are taught by someone that they like and feel comfortable with. Without chemistry between the two, it can actually make things worse.

  • The NASSP Honors 3 School Leaders for Digital Principal Awards

Congratulations to Michael King, Patrick Larkin, and Eric Sheninger on receiving the NASSP’s first ever Digital Principal Award. These three educators are great role models for educators who are working to engage the digital learners who are currently sitting in our classrooms across America.
Current educators have the huge responsibility of creating digitally literate learners. For educators, saying current with new technology can be challenging and overwhelming on so many levels.
    1. Teachers & students need access to technology. Technology resources are limited in many schools and districts. Additionally, each school has a different commitment level to technology and software. However, whatever resources are available, educators need to discover the best way to engage their students. If there is limited technology in a school, perhaps the students can gain access at home or at the local town library.
    2. Teachers need professional development. Teachers cannot simply jump into technology without the training, knowledge, or expertise to teach 21st century skills effectively.  For example, twitter is a great educational tool for connecting with other teachers and students around the world. However, learning to use twitter effectively and efficiently can be very time-consuming and long process.

Personally, I have been using twitter for the past few months and I still feel like I am learning so many new things everyday.
    3. Teachers need support and guidance from administration. Many school leaders face the same challenges as teachers when trying to learn and model 21st century teaching tools and skills. Not every school system has individuals as engaged, knowledgeable, and skilled as the three school leaders selected for this impressive award.
The good news is individual educators can access these skills in a variety of ways. You can connect with these three leaders through social media such as twitter – @bhsprincipal, @digitalsandbox1, @NMHS_Principal. Connect with the educational leaders. Spend 20 – 30 minutes a day noticing how they are using technology. Read their blogs and the blogs they recommend.
21st century skills are a requirement for success today, why not learn from the best?
The following biographies were taken directly from the NASSP website, which is another great resource for educators. Congratulations to Michael, Patrick, and Eric on this great honor.
“Michael King, Principal, Dodge City (KS) Middle School
    http://digitalsandbox.weebly.com/
During Mike King’s 32 years in education, his schools have been recognized with an Oklahoma Medal of Excellence and National Blue Ribbon, among other honors. He has also been individually recognized as the 2005 finalist for the Oklahoma Medal of Excellence Award Educational Administration and was a finalist for the 2005 Association of Professional Oklahoma Educators Foundation Award in Educational Administration. This success is inseparable from his commitment to advancing learning with technology and his firm belief that digital tools can help students unleash their creativity and construct knowledge. This belief provides the foundation for the Creating the Classrooms without Walls program, in which students participate in a universal learning experience, utilizing mobile tools to continually access and create multidimensional patterns of explanations of the world around them.
Patrick Larkin, Principal, Burlington (MA) High School
    www.patrickmlarkin.com
The hallmark of Patrick Larkin’s success as a principal is his commitment to sharing learning, and he has created numerous platforms for that sharing that have caught on across the globe. He is a cofounder of the Connected Principals blog, a group blog that promotes discussion among school leaders, and the corresponding #cpchat hashtag on Twitter. He has also directed the EdCamp Admin unconference to gather school leaders in person to discuss the use of digital tools. Larkin conducts regular Parent Tech Nights to assist parents in working with their students to maintain a healthy online profile. In 2012, he led the launch of a 1-to-1 iPad initiative, the journey of which can be found on his blog.
Eric Sheninger, Principal, New Milford (NJ) High School
    www.ericsheninger.com
Eric Sheninger is a rockstar among educators on Twitter, with more than 17,000 followers in his professional learning network. On that network, he shares a passion for fostering learning environments that are student-centered, collaborative, flexible, and prepare all learners to succeed in the 21st Century. Sheninger has emerged as an innovative leader in the use of social media and web 2.0 technology as tools to engage students, improve communications with stakeholders, and help educators grow professionally. Named one of the “20 to Watch” by the National School Boards Association, Sheninger is coauthor of Communicating and Connecting With Social Media: Essentials for Principals, and he blogs regularly at Huffington Post, Connected Principals, and A Principal’s Reflections. A current focus of Sheninger’s efforts is a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiative at New Milford High School.”
Best of luck learning how to engage our digital learners. I hope this was useful!
