This is a great activity to use with a psychology unit on memory and thought. It seems to add motivation to the students when it is a “Hall of Fame” opportunity. Whenever possible, I try to incorporate a chance for a student to gain immortality by being a member of the Hall of Fame.
1. Is there a 4th of July in England? Yes there is, it just is not a day of celebration like it is in America.
2. How many birthdays does the average man have? One
3. Some months have 31 days. How many have 28? All of them. 12 months have 28 days, most have more than 28.
4. How many outs are there in an inning? 6 outs – 3 in each half of the inning.
5. What is the minimum number of active baseball players on the field during any part of an inning? 10 – 9 fielders and 1 batter.
6. Is it legal for a man in California to marry his widow’s sister? If he has a widow, that means he is dead, so NO!
7. Take the number 30, divide it by 1/2, then add 10. What number do you get? 70 – Have the students who take calculus of honors math explain it.
8. There are 3 apples and you take 2 away. How many apples are you left with? 2 You have taken 2 away.
9. A doctor gives you 3 pills and tells you to take one every half hour. How long will the pills last? ONE hour (1st pill = 12:00, 2nd pill = 12:30, 3rd pill = 1:00) The question is how long will the pills last, not the effects of the pill.
10. A farmer has 17 sheep. All but 9 of them die. How many sheep are left? 9 all the rest are dead.
11. How many animals of each sex did Moses bring with him on the ark? None, it wasn’t Moses, it was Noah!
12. A butcher in a market is 5’10” tall. What does he weigh? Meat (To confuse the students, ask it any students are 5’10. You also could say, let’s say the butcher is a man.)
13. How many 2 cent stamps are there in a dozen? 12 every dozen has twelve. (For fun, ask the students if they know what a “baker’s dozen” is?)
14. What was the president’s name in 1980? The name of the current president, he was just a little bit younger, but that was still his name!
15. Why can’t a man living in Winston-Salem, N.C. be buried west of the Mississippi? No because he is alive (unless he might owe the mafia a large amount of money.)
