  • Write a Christmas Letter NOW!

    Write it Forward

An English teacher from Massachusetts was the inspiration for this activity. Writing letters is a lost art and it is extremely rare for a person to receive a hand-written letter. With a sincere effort, the recipient will appreciate the time, thought, and effort that you put into your letters. My class is completing this activity to see what type of impact the written word can have on others. The class will send out one letter a day during the remainder of the school year. Hopefully we will receive some positive feedback.
On the “writing day,” student should bring:

    1. PEN
    2. IPOD / listening device (if you choose)
    3. Paper

    An envelope will be provided.
The class will send out letters as a class on the first day of the activity. Then for each school day, one student will be assigned to write an additional letter. ALL LETTERS will be mailed from the school. The teacher mailing the letter guarantees that it will not be lost!
A teacher may ask the student to keep a few examples of the letters as models for future classes. I am attempting to write one letter each school day during my lunch period. These letters can also serve as models. If students agree to share the letters, photocopy the letters and white out the names so ALL the letters will be anonymous.
Each letter will include a typed explanation of the assignment, a request for feedback, and a request for the person to write it forward. All the information will be passed on with each letter.
Can this work? I will keep you updated as the year progress.
    Below are some format ideas:
Top line – Date, weather, time started.
The Letter – There are many different topics to write about in your letter.
Appreciation – The first focus should be appreciation. Write specifically about what is admired and appreciated in the individual. Include specific examples or anecdotes / stories whenever possible. This should be the most moving part of the letter.
What’s going on? – This can include the events that are going on in life such as work, school applications, family events, etc. Essentially write about what is going on in life.
Questions – You can ask the person you are writing to questions about what is going on in their lives.
The Closing – Finish up the letter with an appropriate closing. Reiterate what is appreciated about the person, write about how glad you are to have them in your life, or choose another option.
List the TIME OF COMPLETION after your signature.
Give your best effort and let’s see where this goes.
Below is the 2-sided handout that is included with the original letter. This page should travel with each letter

Please fill out your information below and include this page with your letter!

Letter of Appreciation: Write it Forward

In our society, we rarely acknowledge the important people and relationships in our lives. Days, weeks, months, years, and sometimes, even lives pass, without ever writing to the people who have positively impacted our lives. My class has set a goal to write letters to important people in our lives. I have selected you.
The goal of this project is to see if one letter can inspire others to “write it forward.” If you receive a letter, you are asked to take some time to write it a letter to a person you appreciate. If you are busy, just take 5 – 10 minutes to complete your letter (but if you have more time, please use it.) The only catch is you cannot send a letter to the person who sent you one. (A little like no taggsies back!) The requirements are:

    1. SNAIL mail or hand delivered. (No text messages, tweets, etc.)
    2. Hand-written if possible. If you would prefer a computer that is fine, however if you handwriting is legible, please use this method.
    3. PLEASE RESPOND that you have received a letter. My teacher’s email is youremail@yourschool.org. Our class is tracking the location and impact of our letters. If you could take a few moments to share your thoughts with my class that would be AWESOME!
    4. My teacher also mentioned a reward for the class if we receive enough responses, so if you can please spend a few minutes writing a letter to an important person in your life, we would greatly appreciate it.

Original letter sent by from YOUR TOWN, YOUR STATE to on (the date).
Letter #2 (include writer, recipient, and date)
Letter #3 (include writer, recipient, and date)

Letter #4 (include writer, recipient, and date)

Letter #5 (include writer, recipient, and date)

Letter #6 (include writer, recipient, and date)

Letter #7 (include writer, recipient, and date)

Letter #8 (include writer, recipient, and date)

  • How to Write a College Essay

College essays are generally hard for a number of reasons. Top of the list is because you have no idea what the audience is like and what they expect from you which is understandably okay. On a few occasions, it’s hard because you have many stories tripling over you yet, have no way to deal with it. On lesser occasions, you have a problem creating sentences that make sense because they tumble to you.
Fact is, the ability to write well is great. This is because, if you know how to write, you will never tumble with anything that comes your way. Writing enables you express their feelings, make yours case and sometimes, even save lives. George Orwell is one of finest English writers of all time and states the following writing rules. These rules are also perfect for college level, essay writing.
In as much as possible, don’t use informal language, colloquial and similes when writing an essay. This is because, such use does not sound or look serious the way college essays need to be. Moreover, using colloquial language is subjective because, meaning can be distorted in the process, misleading the readers.
Where necessary, when you are writing your essay, the best strategy is using simple, shirt words and sentences. Where you can say something in a short word or sentence against a longer one, just do it.
If you can cut words out, go ahead and do it
Don’t use a foreign or scientific language where a simple word fits. Many people don t understand scientific or niche based words and statements. To reach out to them, at best, try to keep the words simple and less technical. If there is a simpler, more common term, then use it.
Try to keep the works or essay free of passive voice. In most cases, passive voice slows down the message and reading tempo. Instead, opt for an active voice with more direct action words and verbs. This makes the works more vibrant and interesting to read.
These are some of the rules you can rely on when writing the college essay. Even then, following the above rules doesn’t guarantee a perfect essay. The essay idea and its content is also critical to the impact it will create in the reader. There are some rules as far as the essay content is concerned. This is to ensure the reader leaves with something of value.

    • Choose a subject you care about because that’s the only way you can get the best to the readers and other interested parties.
    • Don’t ramble on and on. People who ramble on and on about a subject get little or less attention.  Instead, ensure that the way you go about the topic exposes you as a sharp and knowledgeable person.
    • Keep it simple
    • Have the guts to cut the story short
    • Maintain your personal sound throughout the essay
    • Say what you mean and the readers will take cue
    • Pity and reason with the reader.

  • What Everybody Needs to Know about College Admissions

For all colleges and universities, your academic record tends to carry the greatest weight in the admissions process. In particular, student grades, difficulty of courses, and SAT scores factor most heavily in college admissions.

College Admissions Statistics 2011: An Inside Look
But strong academic record is no guarantee that you will be accepted to the school of your choice. Why not? Well, most admissions committees practice what is known as “holistic” review (also known as comprehensive review).
What this means is that, while your academic record carries the most weight, admissions folks are also interested in who you are as a person and what you can bring to their college. They determine who you are by looking at your activities, references, and essay responses.
This emphasis on a holistic review can make admissions process very complex. If all colleges just used a mathematical equation of student grades and SAT scores to determine admission, it would be very easy to see if you could get into a specific school or not.
Holistic review, by contrast, is inherently messy.

By taking a holistic review, admission committees often rely heavily on knowing who you are as a person by reviewing your entire application and not just focusing on academic credentials. Private colleges have long relied on holistic review to help build a vibrant and diverse freshman class. In recent years, however, more and more public universities—UC Berkeley and the University of Washington—have adopted a holistic admissions policy as well.
Now the point I am about to make is very important, so pay attention.
There is no mathematical formula that will determine if you will get in to a certain school or not. The problem is that everyone thinks that there is a secret calculation that will determine their admission fate.
Get over it. It doesn’t exist.
All you can do is try to stack the odds in your favor. To do that, make sure that you are applying to schools that tend to accept students with similar academic credentials. And make sure that your personal statement clearly reflects something unique about you. Also, choose your letter writers carefully.
By doing this, you will give yourself the best odds at admission. But remember, there are no guarantees in college applications. There is fair amount of luck involved in admission decisions. You cannot control everything and it is crazy making if you try.

  • Tiara Polisher: A Great Activity for Christian Education

Greetings Heirs, lately we’ve been publishing what we call ‘Tiara Polishers’ to our Tumblr blog and we’d like to share one with you-that may or may not be helpful in your classroom ‘kingdom’.
What exactly is a ‘Tiara Polisher’ you ask?
A Tiara Polisher is any mental, spiritual, educational or physical teaching that can brighten the crowns (minds) of young girls or kids and teens in general. Here’s one we’d like to share that may encourage positivity within your class. Enjoy!
‘Apples of Gold’ is a great and creative activity for kids and teens of any age (or gender) that will encourage positivity and familiarize them with (scripture Proverbs 25:11) teamwork and harmony in a group setting such as a classroom. In both biblical history (Adam, Eve and the Serpent) and fairytale history (Snow White) fruit has often been used to represent good or deceptive advice or words in general….particularily, the apple.
In this exercise, you’ll need: kid/teen study bibles (or a collection of positive quotes), scisssors, black writing markers, thumb tacks, glue sticks, a fairly large (4 sided) box, construction (and/or wrapping) paper and clear wrapping tape.
    1) Create a fairly large tree with the brown or green construction paper and scissors OR you can cover a large box with silver wrapping paper and tape (cut a slit in the top of the box to put things in it). Post the tree (up) with thumb tacks or place the box (out)on a table-both somewhere accessible and visible to each kid/teen daily.
    2) Have each kid/teen cut out (with gold construction paper) apple shapes and write positive quotes or scriptures spoken to them by others or that they’ve found in the study bibles or quote collection.
    3) Once they’ve written their scripture, advice or quote on the apple have them paste it to the tree with the glue sticks or wrapping tape..eventually this tree should grow, creating a wall of positive affirmations to refer to OR
    4) Have each kid/teen fold their golden apples and place them in the silver box…this box will make a great source of encouragement that each kid/teen can draw from daily! This is an activity that will and can last for the entire school year if done successfully…have fun! (Copyright 2012 © Princesses On P.E.R.P.A.I.S.
